Not even any breeding activity here yet.Mine are yelping and no eggs yet. A couple hens are starting to poke around in likely spots. Usually St Patrick's day is first eggs

I was very surprised to see the 2 hens look matted haven't seen it yet, but with the feathers in pen just looks too familiar and knowing these girls started early last spring. Not even any breeding activity here yet.
My birds are definitely all actively breeding. Just no eggs from the sweetgrass or project pen yet. It's been in the 50s and 60s this week. They think it's spring I guess. Not even any breeding activity here yet.
I had one adult hen break her wing during the night. Strange things happened that night that I have no explanation for.My white painted/grizzled poult has a broken wing. They are 8 weeks old. I'm not sure how it happened. I moved them down to the big brooder yesterday and he seemed fine then. I have the wing secured to his body with an old ace wrap and he hates it.
Only time will tell if it will heal. I've treated many a chicken with a broken wing, but never a turkey. He seems depressed and not interested in food today. He just kind of sulks around. His siblings are all active and happy. I know I should probably put him in a small pen by himself to heal but he calls to the others constantly and seems distressed when he is apart from them. I will watch him and hopefully he rebounds.

Aw I love thatMy oldest daughter has been getting her biology teacher into turkey genetics. They have been all over the Turkey Color Genetics website, and she had me send pictures of the turkeys we have to input into the color calculator. It is nice to have a teacher that doesn't just get annoyed at her persistent turkey talk. During FFA week she is going to bring her turkey Shiver, a tri colored mottled slate, and daughter of Slater, to school. She is teaching Shiver to walk on a harness so she doesn't have to carry her. The other kids like to feed Shiver lettuce.
I would have just left the jake to heal without intervention but he is at the age where his wings are getting large and long so it was drooping and dragging. He has adjusted to the bandage and is eating well today. I will keep his wing immobilized for a couple weeks and hopefully it doesn't lose function or mobility.I had one adult hen break her wing during the night. I kept her away from the toms and let her heal on her own.
That is sooo cool! I wish I had teachers like that growing up. Even growing up in a rural town, no one shared my outdoorsy interests or my love for chickens. Except for my high school sweetheart, who is now my husband. Lol.My oldest daughter has been getting her biology teacher into turkey genetics.
