She stopped and looked at Silver "You can not choose when to go to StarClan, StarClan will call you once it's your time to join them" She lifted a twisted wing up towards to sky. "That's StarClan."
Startled, Silver looked upwards at the glistening sky full of color and vibrant. Frowning, she continued to look up, swaying her head a bit from side to side, as though a fresh perspective might make sense of the white hen's statement. Suddenly, it dawned on her, and a chill echoed throughout her body, a cold that had nothing to do with the breeze ruffling under her feathers. Many times, she had seen older hens taken from their metal dens by the two-legs. They were never seen again, but Silver did remember a word associated with their disappearance . . . death. With horror, Silver stared at the white hen, everything coming into sharp, painful focus. "But . . . " she gaped. "but . . . " No words came to her, and she looked away, shame-faced that she had no words of comfort for the aged hen, or any way to address the situation.
She was spared an answer.
The sound of both loud and urgent squaking and clucks echoed around the forest, and Silver's eyes stared wildly around for the source of the commotion. Without thinking, Silver darted along the brambles, heading blindly towards whatever was making those noises. The calls were like the clucks of warning from her friends when the two-legs came too close, or when one of the hens in the metal den had caught her foot in the grating. Was somebody in trouble? Were there dangers here, in this paradise?
Yes, Silver found out, stopping just shy of a large tree in a clearing, there were. Horrified, she saw several chickens leaping on one another and pecking without mercy. Quickly, she darted back to the cover of a few bushes, not too far removed from the fight, watching with anxiousness. Something told her that this was something she should stay out of, and for once, she agreed with herself, and hid herself out of sight, at least until it was clear who was the victim and who was the attacker.
