My second dud, Wellie. Although I am still holding out hope that she is not a permanent dud like Goldie. She is 31 weeks old. No squatting, no interest in the nesting box...she LOOKS like she is close doesn't she?View attachment 1176589
Your Wellie looks just like my 35-week-old Chipper; I'm still waiting for her to quit slumming and help with the financial upkeep of the hen house. However, I think maybe Chipper has turned a corner - the other day she threw out all of the nesting material and shredded the cardboard liner in the nesting box that the other girls all use. That's at least interest, right? Or maybe jealous frustration? Today she was sitting on three eggs that her sisters had laid as if she laid them herself...I hope Chipper isn't another Goldie, just going through the motions! :gig

This is Goldie, 3.5 years old. She has never laid an egg. She has squatted for me since she was a couple months old. She still goes to the nesting box and goofs off for an hour or so, and comes out singing! I don't think she realizes that the other chickens are actually doing something when they are in the nest! Goldie may be a slacker but she is a really stunning hen! Sometimes looks are everything! ;)

I think one of my duds *might* have laid an egg. I found an egg in the coop today, but NOT in the nest box. My one and only layer always deposits her egg in the box. Sometimes she breaks it, but always in the box. This egg was not in the box and a slightly different color. I'm hopeful it came from one of my duds and I have a new layer. I won't know for sure until I get two eggs in one day. We'll see how the next few days go. Fingers crossed.

Go Gertie go!

So my mystery continues. Today I had not one, but two eggs in the coop, neither one was in the nest box. I swore that the day I had 2 eggs was the day I had 2 girls laying. One egg was frozen solid and split open, the other egg was warm, both were identicle in color. This makes me think I possibly missed seeing the one in the dark last night since it wasn't in the nest box and that's the one that froze and the warm one was from today. Sooooo maybe 2 different eggs from the same bird, or maybe both eggs today from different birds :idunno
