A coon killed 2 of my chickens early this morning.

Here are some suggestions:
1) GUN, definitely--do you have a F.O.I.D. card, or whatever you need to comply with local laws?
2) Hot wire is cheap and very effective--there are backup solar units you can buy
3) Hardware "cloth"--the wire stuff--bury 12" three to four inches under the exterior border of your ENTIRE enclosure (HORIZONTALLY), then cover and plant stuff on it. Take the rest and bend it vertical and run up on the INSIDE of the enclosure
4) Motion detector lights with high voltage lamps--there are solar versions of this, too
I'm with you about dogs
---even though I'm a little sloppy about my 2. BUT, my neighbors know my dogs and know that they are friendly. I need my 2 mid-sized dogs to chase off anything that comes in from the fields to the west and south of my property. Daughter spotted a coyote in town at 10PM last night--they don't usually come this close.

Since that coon found a place to get a meal, he will probably come back. I'd suggest getting a live animal trap, bait it, and leave it outside the coop/run where he got in the last time. I've caught quite a few 'coons, 'possums, stray cats, and one skunk this way.

jobmcd -I had that happen last summer but luckily I was there to chase the hawk away - only had some missing feathers on the backside and some very stressed out chickens.

I let my pullets out to free-range to hopefully coax her out if she is still alive and just hiding. I am losing hope now since it has been over 7 hours.
ducks - already use the motion light & own a pellet gun (I know it is just a large bb gun but makes its point known and will kill). Since we haven't had predators prior to this I will probably just bury the hardware cloth and skip the hot wire.
keesling - that is what I have heard about those coons and I have been busy making everything secure until I capture the beast! I think I know where it is hiding and set the trap where I have seen the digging.
