A gum mess. HELP!!

My son got out his box of plastic animals, and apparently some time ago he'd left a wad of Juicy Fruit on top. Well, the gum had slowly oozed to where it coated many of the animals and made a puddle in the bottom of the plastic box. I put all of them in the freezer in hopes I'll be able to peel or pop it off. Any other ideas?

Freezer would be my first choice, garbage can the next...

You might try vegetable oil. It tends to break up the ability of gum to stick to itself and other things, but go cautiously, because it can help to spread it, too.
