Hello, I currently have a hen who seems to have a prolapsed vent. I don know how long she’s been like this. Tonight as I was putting everyone to bed I saw she was dripping both blood and what seems like yolk from her backside. There’s blood and yolk smeared on her butt and I think part of her inside is on the outside. But it’s a small amount. I am wondering what to do, some threads I’ve read are saying to push it back in, while some are saying to leave it and it’ll go back in. I’m confused and quite frankly freaked out as one of my roosters has an eye closed shut and the other one is also shutting and opening one of its eyes with water coming out. I would appreciate any help thank you so much.

I'm sorry this is going on for you :(
Do you have any pictures of the prolapse? I'd be a bit wary of pushing it back in just yet if she's dripping yolk. Can you clean her up and put regular petroleum on the prolapse to keep in moist?

Hey, thank you for replying. I don’t have a picture but I can definitely get one tmr morning I hope she will be alright. I will try cleaning her up but tonight she wanted nothing to do with me and she is one of my more skittish hens so I couldn’t do anything alone.

to clean her up, it is damn near impossible. She is very skittish and th yolk/blood is dried into her feathers. As for her vent I tried to get some Vaseline on, not much got on. But I did do sprays of vetericyn plus, so her vent is still outside. It is red and looks weird. She had a sip of water with some stress ade+ but quite literally only one sip. She doesn’t seem to be eating much. I’ll attach pics of her vent but im sorry they’re not good.

I would soak her once a day in a tub or dishpan of warm soapy water or Epsom salts water for about 20 minutes to clean off her vent. Do not let the prolapse tissue dry out, and for that you can use the vaseline, mineral oil, or hemorrhoid cream. Honey is also good. It can take days to a week or so for the prolapse to go back inside and stay. If her vent was pecked by the other chickens, that may cause more damage. Sometimes a stuck egg or soft shell egg can cause the prolapse from straining, and the egg can be broken. Keep her separated until her prolapse stays inside. Giving her a calcium citrate tablet with vitamin d or a Tums orally can help muscle tone and help the prolapse.
