Well we just got back from vet with Prissy. And she is a fine, healthy 5-6 month old. Has tape worms but that's expected and easily fixed. But boy does she have a little Min Pin "Little Dog Syndrom" attitude. Was tearing us up, me trying to hold her - so vet muzzled her. Then she tore me up with her nails - I have bleeding scratches to prove it. What a little fighter. Wasn't going to let us back in truck with her at first. We had to put her in truck, with it running and a/c on, while we helped vet re-wrap Bitsy's (the goat) broken leg. When we tried to get in truck, Prissy was some p'o'd and was snarling and growling at us. Of course two seconds later, after trying to kill me and rip me apart, she's my best friend again.

Boy, these little dogs. I've only had big dogs and if my Shepherds acted like this people would be saying they were dangerous and needed to be put down. DH, who worked at a vet's office while in college, said the little dogs were always the worst and that Prissy didn't act as bad as he expected. Of course, he stood out in lobby while I got ripped to shreds trying to hold her. I did find another huge tick deep in her ear canal last night. We had noticed that she yelped sometimes when being petted so though it was tough to try and examine her ears, I did and finally got it out with tweezers - it was deep in ear canal and hanging on with a vengence.

Good news on Bitsy is that her leg is healing well - its' been three weeks and this is the first time the vet has had to change the wrap. She's hoping in another three weeks, she will be fully healed. Bitsy was such a sweetie. They have fallen in love with her. Maybe the vet will rethink the whole "I don't see goats" thing.

I am glad to hear all is looking up Ruth. Thanks for keeping that little fighter. She is so young to of been left on her own, I am so glad you found her. She is young enough that she can be retrained. Thanks for taking her.

Here's a quick post - no power or phones here - running off generator. We got hit HARD by Gustav. Took out our huge old Live Oak trees and pecan orchard trees. Pecans were 100 years old, Live Oaks even older. The oaks, when they fell, then took out camelias, gardens and fences. But we are blessed, family and friends that were here are all fine and our home was spared (minus a few shingles).

Looks like we might have lost one duck. A bunch of them apparently flew out and went for a moonlight stroll during storm and all but one was back in the morning and wanting back in their fenced yard. Sadly it's a female that's missing. I only had 5 females out of 17 ducks so she will be missed if she doesn't turn up.

I kept the chickens locked in the coop till just a little while ago and man were they MAD. They did NOT like staying "cooped up".

I brought the newest hatchlings (Ruth's babies) inside since we do not have a brooder light now and the coop was getting way too much rain and wind blowing through it. They are doing great.

Sadly I may lose the 10 developing eggs in the bator cause I can't keep it on generator. They were a couple of weeks along.

Well, gotta run - should be doing my "real" job with what gas we have. Town is shut down and no one has gas. Natchez and Baton Rouge are also shut down. So looks like we are going through a repeat of Katrina. Three years ago we were living in Covington (N.O. area) when Katrina hit and had to live two months with no power, living off generator. We move to Woodville, MS and get hit three years later, almost to the day, by Gustav and word is we won't have power for a month. So if you don't see much on here for awhile you'll know why.

God is good. I am blessed.

BTW, Ruth, have been trying to raise my chicks sort of along the lines that you have and it is working beautifully so far! Healthy, happy and free ranging for about 2 wks. now with the big girls. They are now 6 wks. old and have been in the outside coop since 2 wks. of age. You were right, they got their plummage early and have turned out to be a hardy, lively bunch of girls.
