Wow Karen - thank you so very much. How sweet of you to say. Welcome to BYC, it's full of inspirational people.

Well, for the last few days, things have gone rather smoothly.

Bitsy is healing well.

Ducks are thriving:

Ruth is a mama. I hatched two of her eggs in bator. My first hatches from my own flock. Ruth's babies are the two together. The solid black is from my BSL hen.

Scarlett is growing by leaps and bounds. She has to stay in fenced run unless I'm out with her. She's just too hyper and full of puppy energy and loves nothing more than to make the chickens fly and run. She has caught one from time to time and doesn't hurt it but nearly scares it death because she "mauls" it like she does our cats and it's back feathers are sopping wet from her slobbering all over it. So she's confined unless I'm out there. She still has a long way to go in training.

Not sure if I ever posted about Sweetie, my disabled chicken. She hatched with a deformed leg. She gets arond fine and no one picks on her in fact often come and lay by her but she could get around a lot better if the twisted leg were amputated but I can't get our vet to do it. I should have done it myself when it was a teeny tiny leg as a baby chick but now it is what it is and she loves her life here. Besides, who's perfect anyway????

Here's my Little Blue Team. A blue Ameraucana and one of Cyn's blue orps but I think this one is a black orp. They make the cutest couple and are always together. The little Am. was one of two that hatched and her hatchmate is the one that drowned itself in duck pool before I moved the ducks to house next door. She was three weeks old and alone when this Orp hatched so I put her in with it (him?) She was much bigger but was sweet and gentle. Now he's a lot bigger than she is. They roam everywhere together and are ALWAYS the last ones in coop at night. I often have to "shoo" them in because they are still out playing at dark.

Finally, free ranging does have it's benefits. They start laying eggs really early, as early as four months. Now they may be small eggs at first and I think these take the record, but hey, they're eggs laid by "babies".

Well I think that covers most of the updates. Till next time.......

Dear Ruth,

Wow. What a journey to read this entire thread in one sitting. I laughed out loud, got tears in my eyes, got mad, indignant, freaked out... sighed and ohh'd and aww'd....

Here's what I think -- you should gather all your posts into a book and publish it. I am a writer/editor, and your words have the makings of a great book.

You are still a public speaker, you're just doing it on the Internet. You are one truly great "blogger".

Do you have your own homepage where you publish your musings?

Wow, thanks Chicabee - such a sweet post and it made my day. I'm glad you enjoyed my "Journey". The only other thread I have is the following "Bethel" thread that tells the story of how we came to live on this farm - these two threads I guess are my "blog".

I keep friends and family updated by sending them the links. Everyone wonders what happened to me since I disappeared from civilization.

Hi Cyn - so you think he's a he too? I thought that from hatch because he had such a big comb for a new hatchling, first thing I noticed. Here's another pic from today. He's a beauty and suddenly growing so fast I sometimes miss him when I'm counting heads at night and think I'm missing one of the "babies". Each night he's bigger than the one before and now is bigger than some of my 4 month olds - so I keep forgetting "oh yeah, the baby is the big black one over there." He has outgrown the blue Am. who is a month older than him.

Oh, yes, cockerel. KingsCalls has a black Orp cockerel from me that is just gorgeous. Maybe he'll post pics again soon. Buster also has one he got from another member who hatched my eggs, named Diesel. Do a search of that name and I bet you'll see what your boy will look like soon. He's your boy's brother.

Thanks Cyn - I'll look that up. He's a few days shy of three months old - still doesn't have any tail feathers at all - almost looks like my rumpless Araucanas - but he's suddenly getting big fast. Do the blue and black Orps have the slate colored feet like he does? My Buff Orps have yellow legs. In the pics further up, where he's standing next to his little blue girlfriend, that's a five month old Ameraucana standing behind him and he's bigger than she is (not counting her tail feathers).

Morning Monique, I never realised that your name wasn't Ruth til this morning sorry. I am glad to see an update on you when I get on here as I keep you in my prayers everyday. I am so glad to see your goat is doing better she look great they all do, animals heal so much better then us and they never really complain all that much, makes ya wonder hey.

Ducks look great and those chicks are just too cute. Congrats to you and Ruth on a job well done.

I am going to be throwing eggs in the bator around the 1st of Sept. I lost 18 of my 11 week old chicks to the neighbors dog and because I couldn't catch it there is nothing I can do. Well I raised the juice on my wire to 110 she won't walk thru that one with out feeling it. Those electric yard fences are nice if the dog dosn't become use to the jolt. She got use to it and my fence didn't faze her. So I will be getting 4 doz from Julie in Lower MI, her name on here is jab91864 it was a mixed flock but I had the beauties and only 5 were roo's. One blue hen escaped how I don't know. I will also be getting more from the local lady as hers were in there as well, so I will get 4 dozen from her and will go from there. My neighbors are on watch and I get a call when they see that dog loose, sorry to say if found again it will be shot by someone, all because the owner is a jerk. Sorry to rant but I want to free range and he is the one that put a stop to that idea. One day I will be able to free range one day. I am happy for you and the life you live but boy somedays that green monster grabs me and I just say well I can't but I am glad others can.
I was wondering about Uncle Ugly did he make it to the stew pot or are you still trying to make him into a gentle man. Thanks again for sharing I live the dream of free ranging thur you. jean

Yes they have slate legs and his daddy, Suede, was pretty much a bobtailed boy till your guy's age, too. Here's Suede's big feet back when he was a youngster. The soles should be white, too, not yellow, for proper color. The last one is Suede at 13 weeks old.
