A moment of mourning for the passing of an era

My 8 year old can still bring home made goodies, but according to state law, I don't think we are really suppose too. I see parents bringing in those trays of fancy cupcakes from Wal-Mart and IGA and think of what they spent . . .and how bad that stuff is. I know my cupcakes or cookies have sugar and stuff too, but no added preservatives for sure, and they are made with love. . .I think another reason this is beginning to take shape is because when I worked in the cafeteria kitchen, we would have mom's bring in their cupcakes for their kids parties and they would have them on nasty cookie sheets, didn't cover them with foil, and it was just an automatic turn off . . .so they sort of gently suggested store bought goodies because of that. . .then the scare of food poisoning was such a wildfire spreading thing, that scared them off of home baked goodies, but I thought that was just plain goofy, as where did the food poisoning come from. . .store bought or made foods, no home made foods . . .right now, I just hope I have 4 more years of homemade goodies rights!!!!

The hash brownies, reminds me of a little boy that was in Spec. Ed at a neighboring school brought his dad's pipe to school, and he didn't smoke plain ole' tobacco in it . . . the school was going to turn his dad in, but the spec. ed teacher talked them out of it because she said it had taken over a year to get the parents to even come to school to discuss their boys progress, and to attack them would probably do more harm to the little boy and to let it ride. Later on, about 3 years later, this same little boy was hit and killed by a train down the street from where he lived. Sad what some little kids have to deal with. I also will state something here, not relevent to this post, but I know it will be true, because I saw it at school every day. When the state of Illinois raises its tobacco tax April 1, don't think one minute parents will stop smoking. what this means is more little kids won't have warm coats that FIT, gloves and hats to keep their little heads and hands warm, and good shoes to protect their little feet, because they won't. I saw this every winter at school; most parents will have their smokes before their kids will have good warm winter clothes. . .bet on it.

OK everybody - grow up now!

Anyone who looks at schools works at schools or has any sense of decency knows that there are good parents and bad parents
there are great teachers and some who are not so great
there are wonderful administrations and some who suck eggs.

This is what is known, in the vernacular, as life.

This is also why the post about knee jerk emotional reactions was so spot on. There are many many things in this world that I disagree with. Does everyone need to know I disagree? No!

While I think all of the world is entitled to my opinion I do not deign to grant it to all simply because there is often no point.

On the other hand, if you wish to change something then by all means address it! Don't moan groan and complain - address the issue with the correct people. Do not complain unless you have a viable alternative. Do not bash unless you can solve.

And always remember what my wise friend told me: "Seriously? You are simply not that important." And get over yourself!

Everyone go home and have a cupcake!

I don't smoke, but I sure wish that rude, sanctimonious people would get off smokers' backs. Smokers know the possible consequences just as well as anyone else does, and they don't need a lecture. I would NEVER ask a guest to not smoke in my house unless they were going to be here for several days. For Pete's sake, I can open a door/window to quickly change/clear the air if I want to.

Same goes for reminding someone that they're fat; they know it already.

When fat people criticize smokers or smokers criticize someone's obesity... now THAT really gets me.

yikes! My mom made coconut-chocolate macaroons (

Our school was fine with it...

I have WHAT in my yard? :

This may be my most favorite statement ever!

One of my other favorites- "Just because you are unique/special does not mean that you are useful."
I point this one out to my students all the time. And yet they still bring me cupcakes...

Sooooo, are you telling me that there are no more bake sales at schools and that Girl Scout cookies are verboten too? Jeez, what's next, outlawing a school car wash because it's using water or that the detergent is toxic to the environment? Maybe all fund raisers should be canceled and we should just levy a surtax on everyone so that it's fair and we can spread the hundreds of billions of dollars around a little better.

A-MEN, sista.

And one more thing to the parents out there

You DO know that YOU are in charge of your kids, right? YOU. Not the school, not the teacher, not the government. Good 'ol YOU.

If the school chaps your bum, them make a stink for gosh sakes. It is YOUR school and you can take matters into your own hands.

On that note - I think we will make cupcakes for homeschool math next week....
