A Neat But Freaky Fact About The Forest

I've read that when one tree gets eaten by a deer or leaf bug etc... it can warn the other trees and they start producing things to make themselves taste bad...and get enzymes ready to heal wounds.

I also remember a NOVA (PBS) show about curlien(?) photography where the sort of take a picture of the life force of a maple leaf. then they cut a point of it off and took another picture. The cut off portion was still there in the new photo.

This is a truly facinating topic! If anyone is interested in reading more, check out "Mycelium Running" by Paul Stamets. He calls the underground network of fungi 'the internet of the forest'. There is a video on YouTube where he talks about some of the basic principles... search stamets ted seminars.

And people have always thought I was crazy for apologizing to a tree when I have to cut one down.

Well I do. I love the big old trees and what they must have lived through to reach 100+ years. All the history around the old ones.
Maybe its just my native blood coming through????
