A NN chic just hatched and has this wrapped around a leg ?!?!

Wat should I do?!?! It's little foot is swollen so Im afraid to hurt it and pretty sure it won't come threw easily but do ya think I could snip it to free his leg or wat should I do ?!?

Hmm... if that is not the umbilical cord, which would dry up and fall off, I'm willing to bet that that cord is an intestinal loop... is it coming out of the naval?

If you can't get it off from around the leg, and is an intestinal loop... I would cull.

I can't imagine it's umbilical due to the fact that the chick is hatched and out of the shell. I agree it is probably intestine and the bird should be culled. I would leave him in the bator for several hours to see what happens. Most likely this baby will not survive. Chances are there are other problems in the GI system than is visible.

See if you can work the leg through and if you can then determine where it is coming from and what it might be.

If you can get the leg released without damaging the bowel and if the umbilicus is still open, you can irrigate with sterile saline or sterile water and try to work it back inside his gut. Then either hold a little pressure until his belly closes or tape on a tiny moist dressing. If the umbilicus is already closed or the bowel is leaking, then culling is your only choice. I am sorry.
