Maybe you could have the photo period extension in the evening when the water would still be warm. The light would need to be on a dimmer at the end of the time so the chickens could get to their roosts before it was full dark, but maybe that could work. Just thinking out loud, Carrie

That may not work in winter as some days never get above freezing. As far as lighting goes, I am extending the day before dawn and after dusk -- this will allow me to have the most "waking hours" while the chickens are up and about. I have designed a coop automation system that controls 6 meters of LED strip lighting (including proper dusk emulation) among other things.

I just laughed so hard at everyone having a big deal about the OP wanting to heat a coop. The main reason to heat a coop is for more egg production. keeping your girls warm is good for that. LOLOLOLOLOL

I too am working on making a passive solar heater using batteries to store electric to heat at night. Mine shuts off and stores energy in the day and heats the coop at night. but mine is not to get better egg production. most of my chickens are hearty but i got a black sexlink that shivers when its below 35degrees don't know why. she is a bit of an annoying chicken when cold. got to keep her warm or she gets really loud and annoying at night. when she is warm shes quiet. the other chickens don't like her so she sits alone etc.

P.S. OP, I like that solar heater and want to make one for my house, it gets cold in winter and heat is $$, my house is drafty (or is well ventilated )

If the coop is rapidly exchanging inside air for outside air, such that it maintains temperature and humidity very closely in line with the outside air when occupied by your flock, it is "well ventilated". If that air exchange results in noticeable currents across your birds where they roost or nest, it is "drafty".
