A remark that deflates me like a popped balloon

I'm happy to see that there are others who have the same problems with people/family that I do. I really just don't pay people any attention any more and have come to expect off-remarks about my love affair with animals. I don't plan to change in order to suit everyone else and as someone said earlier...the older I get, the less I care about what others think. I just should have been born on a farm and then gone on to marry a farmer/rancher. It's the life I love and I plan to live the life I love until the end...life is short, and having chickens and other animals makes me happy. All smarty pants remarks get this:

End of story.

Personally, I think it may have more likely been selfish to insist on trying to have more children with a high likelihood that you would not be there for them ... who would that help? Forget anyone who thinks otherwise, they do not have their heads screwed on straight!

Yep, yep!! DH & I are the very first heavy metal farmers in our county. I love being the weirdo, it keeps people from trying to cross our land to get to the ballfield. They go waaay around the "scary tattooed people who listen to that there satanic music". Cool

It comes down to people thinking they know what you should do better than you do. I'll take advice, but only when I ask for it. Unrequested advice usually just ticks me off.

I don't think the initial home visit is the issue here; at least that's not the way I'm reading it. I think most people have a problem with the shelter employees, rescues, etc. dropping in at a moment's notice AFTER the initial home visit and adoption have been done...

Not a thing! DH and I are hoping this doublewide on six acres comes through for us, since we have to be out by the 1st or so and, to me, this would be the ideal rental! I have long told DH to get me a doublewide on some land and I'll be happy as a pig in...well, you know...

Yes, or they have some crazy requirements, like raw diet only, fence must be at least 6 ft high. Stuff like that.
I have seen folks who would have made wonderful adoptees turned away because of stupid requirements that shouldn't be there in the first place. An initial visit is fine, that's just the shelter making sure the dog will be in a good place.

I dont know, but how do you know they would not? You assume guilt, in that case. I walk in to your shelter and it is assumed I am a scoundrel, until only you can prove otherwise. Again, that is arrogance of the highest order.

That is the whole "omnipetent moral busybody" thing Mr. Lewis commented on.

I do agree with you - reasonable requests are just that, reasonable. I really don't have a problem with that. And you are a moderate person; I believe that. Most people are. I dont have a problem with optional home visits, either - if it's my option, not yours.

But at some point in becoming watchdogs, purging those we perceive as undesirable, we step over the line. You yourself admit that there are those who do get carried away. I'm willing to bet they were once moderate people, too.

If you recall, Germany went that way once. And we fought a revolution in this country over formerly moderate controls gotten out of hand...

As they say, absolute power corrupts, absolutely.

Now, I suggest we let the happy, animal-loving folks get on with their thread. You and I can take this up in private.

LOL, deal! I'm PMing you.
