I do agree with you - reasonable requests are just that, reasonable. I really don't have a problem with that. And you are a moderate person; I believe that. Most people are. I dont have a problem with optional home visits, either - if it's my option, not yours.
But at some point in becoming watchdogs, purging those we perceive as undesirable, we step over the line. You yourself admit that there are those who do get carried away. I'm willing to bet they were once moderate people, too. 
If you recall, Germany went that way once. And we fought a revolution in this country over formerly moderate controls gotten out of hand...
As they say, absolute power corrupts, absolutely.
