A Sorry Sight

You might put a temp bait station out for it. I'd put it down, it looked so sickly I am thinking that mange might be just one of a couple running through it's system. I'd be worried about distemper too.

Unfortunately, my retriever is not that good on recall and now that he has encountered him twice in the same place, he makes a beeline to the area when we walk. Otherwise this would be my next move. Just had his vaccines done in Sept tho so hopefully he is fully covered.

If it was I, I would place out some dogfood for it, to draw it in, bait it. I hate to see an animal suffer and you could tell that poor thing was suffering. Just by the way it stood, you could tell it itched everywhere, in complete discomfort. I hope you can put him out of his misery.

This is the most confusing thread ever. I take it most people on here kill healthy coyotes. But then in this thread people don't seem to want to see them suffer if they are ill and would go so far as to bait one in to kill it? Why not just say you want to kill them all. I think that's what we are getting at here.

I think you misunderstand most of us. I don't kill just to kill. I raise animals for the table and for pleasure. My animals deserve the best care I can provide them regardless of which category they fall into. The animals I raise for the table are dispatched as quickly and cleanly as possible without the fear and stress that comes from a more commercial opperation.

Part of my responsibility to my animals is preventing (as best I can) predation. Any predator that targets the animals under my care will be dispatched. That doesn't mean I enjoy it, it's just part of my job. A sick or badly injured wild animal would also be put down. Again, not because it's enjoyable, but because it's the responsible thing to do.

Personally I live by the don't bother me and I won't bother you way of life. But I also will defend my chickens. But if I do my best to protect them and one gets eaten...well I cant blame the predator at all. They need to eat too! And they are only doing what they know how to do... hunt their food. So really, I cant be mad at the critter

We have moved into their habitats, removed their other sources of food....I cannot find it in my heart to blame them for doing what they do. I will mourn the loss of my girls, but I know also that it is a fact of life that chicken tastes good and even the predators know it! All I can do is my best to keep them safe, but I know it is not 100% foolproof.

I also think that one has a responsibility as a human being to put something out of its misery as well.....its called compassion.

Seeing an obviously ill and suffering animal like that...yes I would put it down if at all possible. That's no quality of life to have at all, watching it on video...and it can pass that on to my own beloved furry pets.

Death and suffering are two different things. I don't kill healthy coyotes that leave my stuff alone, I only kill those that chew/dig into the chicken coop. The number of coyotes I've killed? NONE.

I don't want to see all coyotes dead, they have a valuable role in the ecosystem. But they need to stay in the ecosystem and out of my coop. The OP hasn't had a problem with this coyote taking their pets/lifestock, then why are we suggesting the OP kill it? Because it is suffering, mange is a horrible thing, causing the animals to bite and scratch themselves to death, compromising their immune system making them easier vectors for disease.

Just because we suggest someone to put a coyote obviously suffering terribly with mange out of it's misery, doesn't mean we want coyotes hunted into extinction. What a horrible accusation to pin on people who are suggesting the OP simply humanely put the animal down. What is wrong with that? Humanely killing an animal and allowing one to suffer are two completely different things. Animals that kill my pets and livestock, I may wish gone or dead, but I never wish them suffering or pain.

I hate to see anything suffer. Because I am a compassionate person, I'll kill them first, bury/burn the corpse and move on with life.

If I have problems with them attacking and going through my coops defenses, I'll trap and kill them all because I am a compassionate person and my family likes to eat too. There are plenty of rabbits, squirrels and deer for the coyotes to eat, and they can leave me and mine alone.

There's no loss of habitat issues where I live so..............
