A Support Thread For Those Of Us Living In An Egg-Free Zone

I'll have to work it out. Our last egg was the day after I set the incubator running. The chicks were 8 weeks on the first. So 13 weeks about 90 days egg free so far . We'll see if our older chook or one of the silkies lay first .

Oh no sjturner79 I was going to say "do not work it out", when you know the real truth it will just be more depressing but I was too late.

We can sail down denial river thinking to ourselves that "it has not been that long" but then when we sit down and count it up .. denial river dries up and we hit the bottom

I am still weighing up whether nah, nah, nah, nah, nah's are appropriate when one of us does break the drought

Is it appropriate to jump with joy when others are still living in the zone?

I think yes. So, if any us do break the drought, feel free to jump with joy in here .. right now, any egg not purchased from the supermarket is a reason to celebrate, even if it wasn't laid by one of my gals

Many thanks to Bill Withers for the inspiration … I dedicate this to the EGG

Ain’t no omelette when your gone
It’s no fun where your away
Ain’t no omelette when your gone
You’ve been gone much too long
Any time you go away

Ain’t no omelette when your gone
Wonder if today’s the day
Ain’t no omelette when your gone
And this coop just ain’t the same
Any time you go away

Yes, I may have officially lost the plot … lol

I love it but can you do a YouTube video version it would be better to hear it !

Howdy Luke and welcome to the Zone

I hear ya and sympathize :)

I have a sneaking suspicion, with Winter upon us, we may both be waiting a while.

Usually if you're young birds can 'crack' into the egg laying about 2-4 weeks before the first of the short days then they will just lay right through.
This is what I had planned for my new Marans, but as we all know, chickens do nothing better than to spoil those plans...

Mine might still be a while. My one that was laying has an injured leg, 2 are just pol now 2 are only 8 weeks and I'm not 100 percent if there hens , and if either rooster starts laying it will be a real shock.

Oh, they are so lovely! Seeing the photographs made me long for chicks. Perhaps when Pumpkin goes broody I will let her hatch eggs or I will buy her some chicks. I don't need more hens, but "need" and "hens" are seldom in the same sentence around here.

Both Kiki and Crystal do have the pullet look - short necks, round bodies and that sweet hen shape. I've had 3 roosters so far and all of them were tall with longish necks and spurs. The boys didn't have to crow for me to see that they were roosters.

We had only 3 eggs yesterday. Some of the girls took Sunday off. They had a long free range time because I was busy in the back digging gardens and planting (and weeding, of course.) If I am out in the yard I let the girls out of their safe run. I try to time my yard work to the cooler hours. That way the hens explore the yard in comfort rather than having to huddle under a bush out of the sun. Whenever I find something tasty the "who wants it?" command will bring one or two hens running to se that "it" is. I love watching the hens run. My girls fly like rocks but they can run when they want a treat.

Because I chose cold weather breed my hens are not particularly comfortable here in the Summer. They are quite happy in the cool and cold weather.

Day 48?

Day 48 in the egg free zone has come and gone … we shall see what today brings.

Lols Sam no YouTube video for me but I am training the gals

Ah yes Luke if chickens have taught me anything it is to have a back up plan

Lol sjturner79 an egg laying rooster would be a shock

Tee hee SNJchickens being plump little bantams my girls fly like rocks also but they all have a funny little running style, one of them definitely looks like a Raptor when she runs.
