A trend we can hope 'dyes' quickly..

If you treat the animal well and the product is not harmful, what difference does it make whether it is in its natural state or decorated?

Do you get upset with owners who request or groomers who give fancy trims? How about fancy collars or "apparel"? Or costumes at Halloween? Do you wear makeup (ever) or dye your hair (ever)? Have pierced ears?

My point is that I am a person and can decide what I want done with myself. I never gave my dog anything but basic health grooming. I once tried to put a new year's hat on her, but I was seven and didn't know any better.Once I saw she hated it, i took it off.
And dyeing your dog and putting makeup on yourself are two different kettles of fish.
Also, I DID put on makeup once or twice and have peirced ears, but as I stated, I'm not a dog.

And that is wrong because ...? I do agree that saying it will affect the animals self-image (especially that of dog's who are noted for their poor colour vision) is pretty ludicrous, although I have to say when I have dyed chickens with koolaid the others looked at them like "What the heck is THAT!?" when I returned them to the flock.

What I was saying is that IMO it is wrong to take your need for higher self-esteem out on an animal. Or another person for that matter.
Why not just dye the tips of your hair pink rather than put a poor poodle through paces and dye her pink? *Not sarcasm* A BYC member dyed her hair pink.

I don't see anything WRONG per se with it. After all, the dog is the owner's property, and it doesn't hurt the dog. However, I find it difficult to think of anything more utterly goofy and wasteful.

Honestly. Is it any surprise that it caught on in China first? I find it a little funny. China is rapidly becoming freer, and at the same time wealthier because of said freedom. It's almost like people don't know what to do with all this new wealth and liberty. Kinda like capitalist growing pains.

At least they're moving in the right direction.

All I can manage at this point is "OMG...WHAT THE...?"
Ok, the photoshopped cats were humorous, but that's different.
Everyone seems to be assuming that it's not hurting the animal--how do we know this? I cant favor something like this w/o knowing if there are any reactions (short or long term).
What I DO want to know is...HOW THE HECK DO YOU TATTO A FISH???

In this country you'd have a good idea if it was safe or hurting the animal by looking at the label on the product being used and also googling the ingredients. I also like to look at the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) for ingredients in products. I do this for a lot of things. Sometimes I find interesting information to pursue by typing in the name of something and the words problem, toxic or side effect. It kind of depends on what I'm looking up. Although new products are created every day, the vast majority are made from ingredients that have been around long enough to have a track record of safety or potential toxicity.

I have no idea what they're using in China and no input on what they do, so for me, it's just a news blurb. I have no problem with the occasional pink poodle or artistic pattern, if it's done with a safe product.

I don't think dying a dog a simple color is any more traumatizing or cruel to a dog than washing it. I have to admit, though, I have seen a few filthy dogs look like they thought they were being abused, in the bathtub.

it's called bleach but it's actually perioxide like they use on us and call it bleach. actual bleach would disolve the hair, not turn it white.

i think the turtle is cute though. He'd probably look better if he wasn't dyed, though. And in the video, he doesn't look like he's enjoying it, does he?

yes, I realize that. Have you ever had your hair "bleached"? It's not exactly a picnic, was my point. It can be extremely uncomfortable, and can even burn your scalp. I wouldn't do that to my dog to make her look like a panda.
