A "What age do they start laying" reference?

Thank you MIss Prissy! I think of that every time I see a post about when the chickens will start to lay. I, like most BYC'ers couldn't wait to get my first egg, but I tried to not get impatient knowing every one of my chickens is an individual and they would get to it in their own time. Some of my light brahma started at 19 weeks, my buffs and darks haven't started yet. No matter. I'm enjoying their teen years with or without eggs. They don't have our life spans and they'll be gone too soon from my life. I want to enjoy every minute of it.

There's no such thing as TMI in my book!

A little OT, but I started when I was 9 and I recently went through the change myself prematurely at 28 years old (from chemotherapy when I was diagnosed with breast cancer).

I'm so glad I'm not a chicken, I would have been headed for a stew pot.

Eggs4Sale has a post about this in this section. It's a chart (not quite completed) of breeds with the earliest egg to the latest egg. Check it out!!

I have six Black Sex Links.

One started laying at 19 weeks.

Next one laid at 20 weeks.

Next one started at 21 weeks.

The last three haven't begun yet at almost 22 weeks.

You can tell by their combs and wattles that they are maturing at different rates.

All were born the same day.

It will happen, but on their timetable.

1 EE 23 weeks old started laying July 29
1 NHR 23 weeks old started laying July 30
1 EE 26 weeks old started laying August 19th
1 EE 26 weeks old started laying August 22nd (huge eggs!)

30 others that were born on March 29th - a variety of EE, BO, LB, BC, BA, RIR - some of these have started the egg squat, but most have not. Just patiently waiting - NOT!!
