Thanks for posting this.

From the other side of the leash: I have had schutzhund dogs for most of my adult life. I've never bred a litter but I have returned several times to the same breeder because he bred such good dogs. My feeling is that a decent breeder who has been at it awhile has invested SOOOO much of himself in his dogs that he has every right to try to place each one of his babies in just the perfect home. When I receive a puppy, I feel this is an act of trust on his part--he is trusting me to do right by one of his babies TO HIS STANDARDS and I feel a moral obligation to be worthy of that trust.

I don't know about the rest of the dog world, but in schutzhund, good breeders with top dogs don't hand you a pup until you proven yourself capable of working with that pup and bringing him up to his full potential. You don't prove yourself in a 5 minute interview. You prove it by joining a club, showing up at all the club functions, working the matches, learning from the successful handlers in that club, being willing to do the unglamorous "skut" work, accepting their criticisms as well as their praise, and basically going the extra mile to prove yourself.

Every dog I have ever had has come from a working line that the breeder has been developing for YEARS. That translates into years of testing, training, working, and investing himself into his dogs. Years of success and years of heartbreak. Money does not buy that kind of dog. Trust EARNS that kind of dog.

Bottom line: the breeder brought that puppy into this world so he gets to decide who can have him and what they can do with him. If you don't meet his criteria, you can either change your ways or look elsewhere. But it is wrong to bad-mouth a breeder for controlling what happens to his puppies. What he is doing is called being a responsible breeder.
