The house rabbit website is also a welth of info, I used to foster for them down here.
Good Luck

Listen stop panicking, for one thing obviously the rabbit has been outside all winter ,.
If it is in a heavy wooden cage it will be fine.
It does need food and water though if you have the oatmeal, hay etc, stuff the cage with that and wait till morning when he will be calmer, they are night creatures and rest during the day.
IF he has been outside for the duration you are only going to create stress by bringing it inside, where it is way warmer than its fur can handle.
short periods of time inside are fine but to stress it out by bringing it right inside from 30 degees to 70 + is too much for them to handle.

I raise rabbits and I also did rescue for a long time, your getting GOOD and BAD advice here.

Thank you all for all the advice. I just moved so I am in MA now. I DO have a pet carrier. Thank you I don't know why I didn't think of that.

He is in a wooden hutch with a hole where he hops through onto a cage area. The wind is blowing in that hole though and he is only a stones throw away from my house. I am waiting for my husband to get home now with bunny food and I am going to go line his wooden hutch part with hay and put food in there. I still want to take him in for the night, will see what DH says when he gets here in a few minutes.

I want him so bad, I can definately give him a good life but I guess I need approval from the owner if he ever comes back. He moved and only comes back on occasion. Sorry if I am repeating myself.

If Your on the South Shore you are only about 2 hours from me. and I do have a friend in Plymouth who can help you also.
as for the jerk coming back every now and again humrumph tell him it passed away and take it anyways.
Chances are if he dosnt come back but every now and again he has no regards for the anmal, otherwise he would have taken the time to rehome it.

good point. That could work too. I gave it a bowl of food and lots of bedding.

Well, it sounds like he's used to bein outside, so I really doubt that bugs him to much, unless he gets wet... Now he does need food and water, definately not lettuce though, that can mess up his digestive stuff, and trust me, that aint fun to deal with. Give him some hay or alfalfa, they need that, and if ya have any scratch, give that to him to. Another thing, takin him from outside where he's been forever and stickin him in the nice warm house aint a great idea, try a garage or barn where he's outta the wind but not in to warm a place, I keep all mine in a three sided barn, they do just fine, I usually have tarps up in winter so there aint drafts or nothin. Also, when ya mess with him, use heavy work gloves til ya know how he's gonna react, cuz he'll probly bite and boy I'll tell ya, they can take some nice-size hunks outta ya (I raise meaties, someone sold me a doe that had apparently been smacked around or somethin and when I reached in the box to take her out and put her in a cage she dang near took the tip of my finger off LOL, it took her several weeks to stop wimperin and freakin out when I got near the cage but she's finally startin to settle down now...) So anyway, if ya dont have a waterer, ya can give him a bowl, but he might very well spill it (I've had folks ask me that before.) When its cold out I give 'em hot (well, not quite hot, just mostly hot) water and that'll help it not freeze so quick, also warms up the rabbit a tiny bit. If ya have any apple, give him a tiny hunk of it, might help him not be so shy... You'll see! He'll try to knock down the door when he sees ya after a while, mine do LOL!

"" when ya mess with him, use heavy work gloves til ya know how he's gonna react, cuz he'll probly bite """

This is fine but be prepared to get bit anyways, 9 times out of 10 you go at them with gloves on and thy think its gpoing to eat them. its forein to them and there fore a threat.

""and boy I'll tell ya, they can take some nice-size hunks outta ya (I raise meaties,""
Its not only the meat breeds that can take chuncks of flesh out, I have had a 2 lb mini rex sink its teeth to the bone.

"""someone sold me a doe that had apparently been smacked around or somethin and when I reached in the box to take her out and put her in a cage she dang near took the tip of my finger off LOL, it took her several weeks to stop wimperin and freakin out when I got near the cage but she's finally startin to settle down now...) This means the Doe was not handled a lot, she isnt wimpering and fghting back to be mean she is terrified. Not necessarily abused.
Best way to combat this fear is to stand there for a few minutes every day and talk in soothing tones to her while your feeding, remember your stress becomes thier fear and will result in a bite or nasty scratch. evenually she will come forward for pets on the head.
What breed is the Doe, some are just plain mean from the get go,
New Zelands,or Checkered Giants, these are not a breed that gets handled like the cuddly snuggle bunnys.
These breeds of rabbits are left in their cages and rarely handled unless to remove babys for the meat pen,. thats the extent of their human contact.

Warm water isnt necessarily a good thing, Warm/ hot water freezes faster than cold, Cold water has to come up to the outside temperature taking longer to freeze.
warm water can also cause GI Stasis, or really nasty stomach pain and gas , you dont want that. stick with normal from the tap temperature water and change bowls or bottles frequently,

As for Scratch grains? are they not just that grains and seed? Do not feed rabbits this it has too much junk in it. domestic rabbits do not need anything form seeds, corn is not good for them , they can not digest it any better than we can.
Although you can give them BOSS occasionally.

Plain pellets, hay, a little oatmeal and Boss once a week and a rabbit will be fine, anything else is too mch and can do more harm than good.

From a long time rabbit breeder-ditto. If he has been an outdoor bunny, he is fine as long as he has a little shelter from the wind. Please don't bring him in, it will stress him beyond where he is now.

How long has he been abandoned? I also completely agree that giving him veggies and fruits is not a good idea at this point. That stuff needs to be introduced slowly.

As long as he has water, rabbit food/hay, and shelter, he is just fine outside. Experienced rabbit breeders and rescuers will tell you that if you want him to be a house bunny, wait until the weather outside warms up, and then it is still a gradual process.

Sign up at www.rabbitsonline.net and ask about this in the breeders forum-you will hear very much the same things as gypsy and I said, from experienced breeders all over the world.
