I thought that if the combs were already red (and wattles too) they are roos. If they are yellow or pale pink they are hens. The hen's combs and wattles don't turn red til they start laying. Is this a myth or true?? Because that is the way that my DD and I are guessing. My chicks are 6wks old and I have a huge one compared to the others and the comb and wattles are blood red! A roo? I wish I knew how to post pics here to show. Not smart enough in the computer era.

I would say that the birds in the pictures posted are all roos. The black & white one is a Barred rock. You can see their wattles and comb growing and already starting to turn red.

That is generally the case. Usually pullet combs are smaller than cockerels, and pullets don't get the wattles like roo's do. They will get them, just not as big. Sometimes they can fool you though. I had 2 Ameraucana's that I thought were pullets for sure, they were 25 weeks old, when I realized that the feather around their neck were looking different than my girls, I posted pic's of them and sure enough they were roos. The were just slow developing. I had 3 Ameraucana roo's that were obviously roo's by around 12 - 13 weeks, and these took way longer develop.
