? about eggs for eating... fertlized eggs? new to all this

ooops, forgot to mention, I have read that eggs can be left on the counter at room temp for 30 days and safely eaten and 60 days in the refrigerator and safely eaten.

Hi,

I have no roos but I've eaten eggs from my friend's farm and they were fertile. I guess I'm okay because I'm still here!

Seriously, there's no problem with eating fertile eggs and I've heard that some health food stores sell them because they're supposed to be BETTER for you (I doubt that, though)!

Enjoy your chickens and eggs!

Lots of people around here are the same way and will go so far as to scoop out what they perceive is the "jizz" in the egg so as to not eat roo "stuff". No doubt this originated in some man's mind......

The only thing we do differently with fertile eggs is crack them individually in a bowl before adding them to any recipe or the frying pan. We do them one at a time so that if you get a bad one it doesn't ruin the others. They really are fine though!! Delicious.........mmmmmm!!!!

ive never noticed any difference between fertile eggs and infertile eggs. everyone i know with chickens eats both with no complaints.

also, i only refrigerate mine if the temp outside reaches 100. we live in Alaska, no air conditioning because it rarely gets hot but when it does, it's downstairs to the basement to play some pool and chill with the quails

My assumption for the tale of not eating fertilized eggs is as follows....

Back in the day when chickens were daily meals, homesteaders and farmers hatched their own birds. Eating fertilized eggs meant that there were less eggs to incubate, which meant less meals later on. Farmers would tell their wives "Dont eat those eggs, their fertilized! Put it in the incubator!" and those instructions have just been passed down from generation to generation.

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it, even if it isn't true!

You may be on to something. Many of the older folks around here, including my in-laws, believe that "new" potatoes are poisonous and won't touch the plants till they're are ready to harvest. I'd bet that myth was started to keep people from digging the tubers that were needed over the long winters. Of course, in a good year, it won't hurt a potato plant to gently grub out a handful of wee potatoes in the spring, but in a bad year, every small tater taken was one less good size one in the summer or fall.

Thanks for all the input! I will definitely be enjoying any and all eggs... well any that I can save for myself! I mentioned I was getting chickens and now have a list of about 10 people wanting fresh eggs! lol (partly the reason I planned to only have 4 chickens and now have 10 chicks living in my kitchen.......and looking at other breeds too!)

And

to all the 'manly' posts! I am sure that is the reason!

I like the reasoning behind not eating new potatoes too... but since I'm going to try my hand at planting potatoes this year for the first time... I'm SURE I won't be able to wait til they are fully mature! LOL I Loooove new potatoes!

I eat fertilized eggs almost cluck every day cackle cackle. Nothing cluck bad cluck has happened to cackle me yet. big_smile

Oh no!! I already do that when I'm in the kitchen or around the chicks outside! There is no hope for me now!
