? ABOUT FIRST MAIL ORDER FOR A NEW CHICKEN OWNER

Ah-ha! Makes sense. I wonder how many days it'd take for an order from My Pet Chicken to reach you in LA; they're out of CT and they let you order whatever you want.

I agree with the other posts. As long as the chicks are raised together they will gert along. They will still establish a pecking order.

Your going to get lots of boys (sorry

). When I went to the feed store and got my 1st chickens we got 5 with 2 boys. On the next set we got 3 out of 4. On this last set of babys (14 weeks now) out of 7, 4 were boys out of 5 silkies 3 were boys and the OEGB was a boy

BTW one of the silkies started crowing at 6 weeks the other at 7 weeks and the last one doesnt crow

Being new your going to have some losses and if you narrow down your breed list to your favorites and order at least 2 or 3 of each breed then your more likely to hopefully get a girl.

Remeber you can always order more later

The other thing I adore about My Pet Chicken is their customer service is so excellent. And, no, I don't work for them!

Their first hatch date this year isn't until February 23rd though.

Foxhound Lady: WOW on the crowing Silkies at 6 wks old! My first batch (straight run from the Feed & Seed: 3 out of 4 roosters!) didn't start crowing until they were five months old. Wacky!

Roosters!!!
A gal down the road from me ordered pretty much exactly what your list is from Ideal last year. She got 30 chicks and 19 of them were roosters!!

She made a valiant attempt to keep most of them but ended up giving all but 3 away to me. They were yummy!

This spring she's ordering pullets from My Pet Chicken.

I got an order of 27 chicks this summer, and both my "special" Polish pullets didn't make it. The layers all did, but my fancy pants girls didn't do it.
If you order 5 of a kind, you'll end up with less disappointment if that happens to you.

Slow down on the roosters.

Look at Ideals "assortments" https://secuservices.com/ideal/newideal/Products.aspx?Category=Assortments%20of%20Standard%20Chickens

and
their weekly specials like the Surprise Special. https://secuservices.com/ideal/newideal/selectproduct.aspx?qty=1&ID=sursp&Product=1104

It
is tough to beat their prices.

It would be like Christmas when you open the box,

you won't know what you have, sounds like fun to me.

I would only "order" one rooster and hope that you only get 1 when you order from their assortments, maybe 2 assortments of 15 each plus 1 rooster= 31 chicks, 1 more than you were planning.

Oh my goo'ness, G Wiz! How terribly fun! What a great site. Much like Christmas!

TATERsmom: It's funny what you don't know when you're just starting out, but now I can totally relate to baby roos as "packing peanuts." My most beautiful Red Star hen was a "packing peanut." When she started to crow, it about broke my heart. "She" didn't become overly rude until a few months later when she started having serious issues with my favorite little roo - and my nieces!
