I'm in Iowa, we do have winters. We just picked up a really nice coop last night and I am working on a winterizing plan now!

I lived in SE Iowa up until about 2 months ago. Although it got fairly cold some years, my birds did just fine. It would be nice for her to have another chicken for her to snuggle up with this winter, though!
As far as treats go, my guineas loved white millet. Even though they were somewhat wild, they would come running for it and follow me anywhere to get it! It was like crack for guineas....they’d do almost anything to get their fix!

Welcome to Backyard Chickens!

Watch out for chicken math!

She's been great! Sorry, I don't think I have email notifications set. She's laid 11/14 days or so and has gotten a bit better about coming out into the run while I am spreading feed or cleaning her water.
All in all, project socialize acquired chicken is going swimmingly!
Yes! Chickens have huge part of their brain devoted to feeding

Henrietta has a friend! I picked up a 2.5 year old Silver Spangled Hamburg that was a bit beta to make her feel better (seeing as we think she was picked on). I introduced them and it was thin ice for a while as Henrietta told her it was HER coop, but according to my husband when he closed the coop for the night they were sleeping in the same laying box, so maybe things will be ok.
