Adding Scratch to hens diet for winter

    I noticed my 2 hens are hungrier for scratch this time of year with the cold weather here. They are not eating the cracked corn portion of the "scratch" as much as they eat the other contents of the scratch....
    are they doing this to stay warm ?
    they are still eating 17% hen layer though....

    That's funny, mine prefer to pick out the corn more so than the other grains. I know I have heard that whole corn kernels will warm the chickens but I am not sure about the other grains. Sorry i couldn't help.

    I've been adding more protein to my hens food as the cold here in the North East has been getting pretty brutal

    They are eating more because of the cold weather. I give mine a bedtime snack of corn chops (mine will leave the other grains) just to make sure they are stuffed for the night.
