advice for buying breeding stock at shows

Quote:
I wonder if this is because in dogs and horses you can rattle off specific names of actual animals and then you know the animal's pedigree. Astute breeders can hear who a horse is by and who its dam is by and know the pedigree all the way back to the 5th generation or more. (The first time this happened to me I had bought a mare at the sale, when I finally got her papers I was shocked when I didn't learn anything as I already knew who was where in her pedigree! Boy that was a proud day! Lol but it also took years, yes years, of study and talking to old breeders and general research.)

Anyway, maybe I'm wrong there but seems people try harder to "sound smart" than they try to actually "be smart" lol. Much easier to just sound smart than actually back it up... + I think most of those craigslist type ads are for the average enthusiast, not people who are very studious, so easier to fool the average dude into thinking he is getting something special (no offense to those that sell or buy on craigslist. I am one of those average fools who bought off of craigslist.)

We must have been posting at the same time! Again, just wanted to thank you! Coming from species where people can be very tight lipped about their breeding theories, I am just very grateful that you're willing to be so open and frank about your experiences!

Sounds like Forrest! lol

Sometimes listening to the "old-timers" is a good idea...

That is what I thought....sound a lot like Forrest. Don't agree with everything Forrest says, but sure do like him! Miss being near enough to drive over and spend the afternoon listening and debating with him.

For those who don't know, Forrest Bufford is a semi-retired APA/ABA Poultry Judge from Oklahoma. He is very conservative and opinionated. He has been a friend of mine since about 1981. Forrest has forgot more about poultry than most will ever learn! Seen him at Eldorado and Pine Bluff shows this spring. Hoping to see him at some shows this fall.

Thanks for the feedback. I do this because I genuinely want to encourage people to get involved with poultry breeding. It's been a life long hobby for me. There are a lot of bad birds for sale out there & a lot of bad advice available. Those things lead to people getting frustrated & giving up. I hate to see that.

He even occasionally produces a pretty good Langshan.

He ALWAYS produces good Langshans.....its those judges taht don't know a good bird when they see it that is the problem. seriously, I do like the fellow. Don't alaways agree with him, but I like him.

A bit off topic, NYREDS, will you be at Shawnee, Oklahoma this Dec? Would like to meet you. We already have a room reserved. Would like to meet a lot of BYCers there.

You will have to forgive her, she has been hanging out with Forrest! Now you got me missing him!

I was just kidding her-I'm older than dirt & I know it.

Oklahoma's a little further than I usually roam-especially in December.

As my dad puts it "He's forgotten more about these birds than we'll ever know." I like the Forrest look to the Langshan. Others tails just don't look wide enough to me. I wish Forrest would write out all of his knowledge in a book but I doubt any of the elders in the poultry world would be willing to write down their "memoirs". *Hint, hint!*

NYREDS I can't blame you for not traveling to OK in December. It's all sorts of nuts sometimes. Ice storms and all that.
