Pepper spray has worked for me around the property also give the bear a bad experience and they will probably not come back.

Even a shotgun blast with salt could do the trick.

a 270 or higher to kill a bear

Yes you can kill a bear with a .22 or a bow (I also hunt bear with a bow); however, the OP sounded like they don't have that much experience with hunting bears and I only recommend the higher calibers because I also know that bears (and pigs) will come after you if you wound them, not all the time but to be on the safe side it is better for someone to not wound them. I also agree with you on the pepper spray, bears have a great sense of smell, just be careful, I have asthma and pepper spray can be fatal to humans with asthma, my first experience with pepper spray was walking into an area where someone had been sprayed about 5 minutes before and my lungs instantly shut down, I barely made it out.
Good luck with the bear!!

Blessings,
Jeremy

Huh... also the serial killers way. Is it illegal to harvest the bear if killed because its attacking livestock?

If its taking out the neighbor's chickens as well as your own, the DEC should be willing to step in and take care of it. If not, why not post up on Craig's list for a local hunter to come and get him/her?

We used to have bad bear issues at our cabin in Tahoe, and I have to say that making your property boarder a public urinal does help a lot. If you have strategies that are working on your hives, the best bet would be to repeat them at the coop if possible.

oops - I forgot. I promised not to post in this section anymore

In the case of a bear it would be SHG..... Shoot Hang & Gut followed by aging, then freezing, then cooking one piece at a time.

We live in an area with quite a few bears and since they are hunted pretty heavy they stay away from humans. Your bear has found food and it will be back I doubt there is much you can do to keep it away now.

I had a bear break into my and eat 7 of my girl last fall, we were having a black out at the time. The bear never hit before because I leave a light on out side the coop all night and I know it works because after 30 hours the power came back on and no more bear.and hit me 3 times the last 2 he early in evening and I chased him off.

By the way I did call DFG and after 5 different # I left a message and they never called me back.

If the bear hold true to form, it should be back in a day or two. Watch for it and if it does come back, you will be able to set a plan for it the next time it comes by for dinner. A bear has
a range that it travels and you can almost set your watch by it. In most cases it is around 14 days. Be ready for it.

Unfortunately, the first attack meant that another one was imminent. I hope lots of folks read your post because probably the only way to save all surviving birds is by spiriting them away to a safer place immediately after a first attack. Otherwise they are just sitting ducks (pardon the species swap there).

I couldn't have chickens in such a situation as I would struggle mightily with all the death at one end of the spectrum or the other (birds...bear). Or I'd have the Fort Knox to shame all other Fort Knox's, so no one dies.

Thankfully there are no bear issues where I live (so far!) so it's wayyyyyyy easier. But I pred proof to the hilt re: the preds I do have so my feather-kids can wake to see another day and so I never have to contend with trying to do in all the wild things that want in. I hope never to have a breach but I know it's always possible. If I were in bear country, my set up would be useless, pulverized lickety split.

I'm so very sorry about all your birds
