Aftermath of Racoon Attack

It has fabulous advice for wound care by some of the best BYC advice givers for injury care. I think it should be pinned.

Ugh. I hate raccoons. I don't think they are better than rats. They ate all my apples off the tree, their poop ooozes with shit that will kill babies and old people, and if it was up to me only I'd set a snare trap, glue trap whatever and bonk them over the head the day after. They are like rats to me.

The raccoons also killed two of my chickens Dec. 17. This was an oversight on our part, we had left the coop open. They were both dead by morning, one decapitated and the other eaten. We have skunks too that will get into the live trap, and that's the only reason these rabies/raccoon roundworm infested creatures get a pass.

On July 16, the husky pit mix across the fence leaped it, killed one of my chickens and severely injured another one. The vet bills were $661 at estimate and over $750 total. The SPCA came out, and I was informed this dog would be euthanized if I chose to press charges on it as it were. We were also told that we would personally legally be liable if we didn't take this chicken to the vet. This cost almost $800. Yes I heard that the dog was a child's pet, yes I heard that it was this "sporting breed" and I shouldn't judge it. But to me it was, look, this 80-pound killer jumped a six-foot fence TWICE then ran throughout the neighborhood. I don't want to pet it. I don't want to know it. If you're responsible enough to pay the $661 vet bill (she did and I paid the rest) I'll endorse giving your dog a get-out-of-jail once card for neighbor relations. But still, that was totally irresponsible.
