So i put 14 pekin eggs from my ducks in the incubator that me and my dad built on April 10th. They were all from our one hen, so some were over 14 days old. they were stored in the basement which is about 50 with 30% humidity and were never turned. i had a really bad temp spike on the 19th. i checked the bator at 1 pm then went to bed and when i woke up at 8:30, the temp was almost 110*!!! i was sure they were gone, all of them. But i didn't give up, i kept them in there and kept the temp stable where its suppossed to be. Our humidity was all over the place, but now its been stable for a couple days. it would be down to 20% then up to 70%. it was disasterous. but i was determined to get babies out of my first and only hatch my parents allowed. if we didn't get any babies, which means no girls, i'd have to get rid of two of my ducks.

but as of today, there are no stinkers and its been days seen the spike. i candled them last night, and even though i have a bad light, it seemed like all of the except MAYBE one or two! one was real old, out of the batch over 14 days old, so i didn't think it would hatch, but i threw it in there anyways. i really hope the babies keep it up and continue to grow and then come out of their shells in 16 days!!...and the countdown begins....

I will! all my friends wanted to have a duck hatching party and watch the ducks hatch...but then i informed them it can take them two days to fully hatch. they don't want to have a duck hatching party anymore, i think they've decided on a house welcoming party after they hatch. LOL!

so i candled today...day 15. and i had good sized baby blobs in almost ALL 14 eggs and air cells, not too big, not too small!! so far, no stinkers and i've made it 15 days!!!!! YIPEEEE!!!

so when i opened the bator for my afternoon turning of the eggs, it smelled bad. the smell was overpowering and i was instantly upset. but finally, when i took them out for their cool-down at 9 and candled, they were all okay! developing really nicely!! and the one that smelled sorta bad, still smelled like duck, just a little stronger. it looked nice, so i decided to put it back in. the bator doesn't smell anymore.

i don't know what happened, but it had SMELLED! i was certain i had lost one or more. but so far so good! *knocks on wood*
just a little bit longer...just a little bit longer!

haha well i'm just sharing my story. non-poultry people don't seem to understand the experience of hatching. its so stressful and exciting at the same time!
