Age to best sell/give away roosters?

Here's the thing - realistically, you have no say over what happens to those birds once they leave your possession. You can put all the stipulations you want in an ad, but once they're gone, they're no longer yours. The only way to really know how they're being treated is for you to build them a bachelor coop and keep them yourself. Personally, we eat our extras. I know that's not a option for everyone, but after putting several months worth of time and feed in them, I'm not giving them away - my time and money are worth more than that. Also, I know that my chickens are treated and fed well if I keep them. I believe they lead reasonably happy chicken lives up until that one bad day where their last few seconds may be a little stressful.

Something to think about in the future. You might want to get sexed pullets next time, or even older ones to be sure you know what you're getting.

I would have gotten sexed pullets if that was an option but unfortunately it wasnt. I wanted true americaunas and most of the time you get EE's if you order from a hatchery. So I was limited to get them locally which unfortunately the closet and most trustworthy breeder was an hour away and he doesnt sex them. I went with him over others because he actually showed us his set up and gave us a tour of his property and birds and you could tell they were very well taken care of and healthy which is important to me when purchasing birds from somewhere else. I have 3 acres so building another pen and coop is possible its just a matter of convincing my husband to build it which is easier said than done.

Your right that once i give away the roos they are no longer mine to say what happens to them but I guess what I dont know wont hurt me. As long as the person doesnt come out and say im gunna eat him then the roo/roos are theirs.

As for buying an older roo, i tried that twice and they were the meanest things ever. On the other hand the roo i raised from a baby was a perfect gentleman but sadly he got killed by some dogs protecting the girls. So i wanted a roo or two so straightrun wasnt an issue for me I just ended up with two to many lol

As hard as it is to sell Roosters...Do not state pet only....? They need to go, so do not ask the buyers what they are using them for...My Roosters get butchered so I do know where they go...I live in Canada and have posted on KIJIJI..Free Roosters...They go quick...

I hear you....Do you really need a Roo? If not planning to raise chicks? Really rethink the Rooster....I never kept one this year...My Pullets are happy.....Most of all, I am happy.

Do I really need a roo? Yes and no. I have 3 acres fenced that my girls free range from 6am when I open their 200x200 ft run(that I never use) until they roost around 8pm and i close them in their coop for the night. I have every predetor you can think of owls, hawks, racoons, possums, foxes, neighboring dogs etc. And 2 of my 3 roosters died from protecting the girls. From a protection stand point I need a rooster. I already have my land fenced in and my husband says I cant get a dog until his cat dies (his cat hates dogs) so as far as protection a rooster is my best option. I know there is electrical fencing and all that but that isnt an option for us atm. Also I never plan to raise chicks but it seems I have the 2 most broody hens you could ever have. I try everything to break them an nothing works. I remove the eggs daily, lock them out of the coop, sit them in water, and put them in a dog crate with nothing but food/water and they dont break. They went 2 1/2 monthes being broody, and lost alot of weight despite me kicking them off the nests twice daily to eat, drink, and poop. In fear for their health I gave in and bought them chicks each time which they happily adopted. In the year and a half ive had them they both have went broody 3 times. Im attached to them so giving them away isnt an option for me. The two feed stores i have near me only carry chicks at certain times and ordering from a hatchery and making sure i take off work to pick them up can be a pain as well as the fear that the hens wont adopt them for some reason or another. So having fertilized eggs i dont have to pay for is kinda a nice plus. Ive just been fortunate in all 3 of my broods i had people who wanted the chicks no more than a few weeks after I let my hens adopt them. I dont know how to sex them so when people buy them from me so young I never know how many pullets/roos i had or what became of them. this is only my second time raising babies up and the first time they were all sexed pullets so its my first time having excess roos. I dont need a roo for babies for broody hens as i can buy day old chicks but I like knowing where the babies come from and not going through the stressful first night of did she adopt them. Another reason I want a roo is I love them. I love the colors, seeing them interact with the girls, and how they crow each morning. Even with the mean ones I loved them, just from afar lol.

One thing that is good, you have experience with Roosters...Sorry your Broody hens wont break....Enjoy your Chickens.....

Yea Ive have some expiernce just not with more than one roo at a time so this will be a learning expirence im sure. As for the broody hens they are both a blessing and a curse but I love them. But thanks and you too :)
