Age to kill ducks?

We got four runner/muscovy cross ducks and we aren't really enjoying them. They aren't friendly, and very messy. We are considering sending them to freezer camp. What age do you usually kill ducks? They are gping on 4 mos. I have no idea what sexes, if that matters.

We have started freezer camp with our muscovies just as the flight feathers on their wings reach the full feathers on their tail. This way they hopefully don't have the chance to learn they can make it to the roof. This usually happens around 9 to 11 weeks depending on the time of year the come of age. You can wait until they get bigger, but they also getter tougher.

It's easiest to butcher when they are fully feathered. Feel the breast. If there are pin feathers, you can feel them.

I could give you a time table for regular ducks, but I doubt that it applies to Muscovy. Regular ducks are 6 1/2 - 10 weeks and if you miss that, wait 6-10 weeks.

I think that Muscovy are more like geese than ducks. Geese are 9-11 weeks, 15-17 weeks, 22-26 weeks. I suggest you start checking for pin feathers and get them butchered at the first opportunity. 4 months should be about right for Muscovy ducks.

If you are butchering yourself, then I would do it asap, as they are messy etc, but if you are having them processed, ask the butcher what age HE or SHE prefers... The pin feathers are a pain to remove.

We've found that the pin feathers are easier to get out after plucking, eviscerating, and chilling; if it comes to that.

Thanks! The pen I made for them got demolished - wind caught their litle lean-to and put it through the fence. Since they've been free, they are actually much friendlier and kind of cute. So, maybe we won't eat them, but glad I have the info.
