Aggressive Rooster - Best Rooster Breed

Though I am new at raising a flock of chickens, I and my siblings as well as my children have had many roosters.
Seems everyone has an extra Rooster they need to re-home.
I have had many different breeds and several very aggressive to humans.
I have yet to find one that did not learn from a good butt whoop'n, that he probably should steer clear.
My current rooster, Rodger, a big Buff Branham has recently had an overdose of rooster hormones and decided to assert himself as head of my entire household.
After I swatted him down two or three times and launched him once he gets right friendly when my wife or I get near.

I had a Phoenix Rooster that was so mean that he chased his own brother all over the pasture and then beat him to a bloody pulp dead. He actually ended up as my 6 yo daughter’s show chicken.

In 4-H they showed us how to take pliers to spurs. You can’t take the whole spur off without a bloody mess but you can take part of it. You need to do it when they are still cockerels. It almost emasculates him and makes you top dog. I’ve had this not work on older birds that I did not raise from chicks but it has worked for me on young roosters who then become respectful older roosters that are safe around children.

I currently have a 14 month old Olive Egger rooster (Blue Ameraucana × Black Copper Marans) that is extremely aggressive towards humans. He is great with the hens and is very attentive and always alerts them to food, predators, and when it's time for bed. However, we recently had 2 intruders and he did NOTHING. We had a neighbors Guniea visit our coop a few weeks ago and it pecked one of our hens a few times and the rooster didn't do anything about it. Yesterday we had a skunk in our coop because we left the doors open for them to free range and again the rooster did nothing. It seems that the rooster only protects the hens against us. My 3 year old niece loves the chickens and I would never forgive myself if the rooster attacked her. He's already scared away my mother in law and to be honest I hate him. We are considering getting rid of him and are wondering if there are specific breeds of rooster that are known for being great with the flock and docile towards people. Any advice and suggestions are appreciated

Kill the rooster if you haven't already. Everything I have crossed Marans to has been just as mean .They are tough I have had to beat the off with a stick . I won't go in the coop without one .

I don't believe that there is a "breed" of chicken that has nice roosters guaranteed. There are many factors involved. I have 4 very respectful/nice roosters, and they are all different breeds. I believe the raising of them has a part, but sometimes a rooster is just bad! I had a real bad rooster and he was raised the same way as my nice roosters. They have personalities and one can't predict a bad rooster. That's my experience anyway. You don't have to have a rooster at all, have you thought of that?

There isn't but one rooster on my place I would turn My back on. a Lemon Buff Orpington ,had a lavender that died yesterday and he and the buff were both very docile .One thing you can bet on if it's a Marans or even part Marans it will turn mean . Never heard of CC,s bred before . If I got some ,and there every was a mean one . I'd get it you can bet on it . The bright spot to a mean rooster is, he keeps you on your toes .

Go by breed standard and find one that is docile. Beyond that, it depends on their personality and how they are handled. Some roosters just get aggressive. It's not always preventable.

I have two more roosters, Greybeard and Bill that are Ameraucana/Welsummer crosses. They have beards and muffs, are pretty sweet and I need to get rid of one, come choose!

I've found, after quite a few roosters, that they will become more and more aggressive the more reasons they have to believe that they or their hens are threatened by us. So if we try to catch the hens, or kick at them, or children run at them, or anything they might see as hostile, they will respond in defense. The nicest rooster I ever had I had to give up because he was too big for my hen breeds and destroyed their feathers when he covered them. But he was always sweet around me and otherwise very good to the hens and I miss him!

I had the same scenario a few years ago. Buster became so aggressive we had to keep tobacco sticks at every door to fend him off. He finally became dumplings ! Had a gold laced Wyandotte rooster that was fine.

Well, ironically Raptor turned aggressive on me just a short time after my initial post. He's just getting big enough to overpower the large laying hens for dominance and breeding (remember he's a jungle fowl so he's bantam-sized). For two mornings in a row he's tried to spur my feet whenever I've around the hens while I'm wearing black crocs. I suppose he thinks they're a rooster. His spurs are still nubs so he can't do damage yet. I figure if there is a chance of correcting his behavior, it's now.

Swatting him hasn't deterred him. So this morning I took a cattle prod to him. It didn't zap him hard but it got his attention. I wasn't even sure that I connected with it as he didn't give a dramatic jump like animals normally do. He just decided to run away from it after I poked him with it a few times. Now when he sees me he gives a quiet alarm cackle and he steers clear of me. I can push myself on him and he gives the ground to me instead of standing off with me as he's been doing. So I'm hopeful there's some likelihood this might work. Hopefully he's not as smart as say, a dog, and doesn't learn only to respect me when I'm holding the prod.

I prefer giving him the discomfort of a zap now than culling him later. I'll report if this corrects the problem as time goes by.

I have had myriad roosters. Some have been the nicest birds and others have been human aggressive. I had to re-home 2 of them because they went after my daughter when she was little. I would not kill a chicken any more than I would kill a dog or cat. There doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason for this behavior. I believe it is genetic, or so I have been told. Yet, I gave someone a setting of eggs from my black Minorca rooster, who was aggressive, and the two male chicks that hatched grew up fine. Granted that is not a good sampling, but I am putting it out there for consideration. It is a difficult conundrum because nobody wants such a bird. On the other hand, I have had Minorca roosters that were totally sweet. I have had New Hampshires that were wonderful and one that was a louse. I have had great leghorns, giants and other breeds that were terrific. I had a Wyandotte who was awful and others that were great. I don't know the answer, if there is one. My friend caponized an aggressive rooster and he stopped his aggression which means, of course, that it is hormonal, but I think we all know that. I, also, found that my aggressive rooster was aggressive to humans only and not to other animals. I wish I knew the answer. I am getting a dark Brahma soon and I hope he is nice. I am going to be in trouble if he isn't because he is big. He is replacing the Minorca who died. By the way,, I love roosters, they are beautiful and I love their behaviors, just not their aggression.
