'vom' is a shortened form of 'von dem', 'from the *male singular object'; if the object (kennel) was female with a definite article, the form would be 'von der';
If that makes sense.
I think it is pronounced OHHHsten but I do not speak German

The vom or von ending depends in part on the word being male or female. Plus some other rules. Vom would be 'von dem.'
