ALABAMA!!

hi alabamian's. I'm new to the forum but love it already. I live in Muscadine. It's about 30 minute's east of Anniston. I'm the last exit off I-20 before you get to Georgia. To j&amac I was wondering the same thing about my Silkie's. I got my first one about 5 week's ago and I know it's a hen because it's laying. I feel in love with the beautie's, so now I have 6. The problem is who is a roo. I've not once heard one crow. Huh!!!!! Thank's Bamagirl for the info. That never crossed my mind. I had decided to use my laying silkie for a broody until I could figure out if I have a roo. I'll start that project tomorrow. To bamadominaker: Me & my old man are professional snake handler's {venemous}. The best thing is to keep property clear of anything snake's can hide under. The second thing is to make sure there is no food source for the snake. Chicken feed is a food sourse for rat's. At my house that's not a problem. Free snake food. Never use poison for rat's. Use rat trap's. Also how many bird's do you have? I have way over 100 & when a predator is spotted they all start clucking. That's good for the daytime but snake's are active early in the morning and late in the evening's, when it's cool out. I would keep my biddie's in a pen that a snake couldn't get into. Thank's for the help & I hope I helped some. PEACE

Howdy Folks.

I am from Saint Stephens Alabama (Bama's first state capital on the banks of the Tombigbee approximately 8 miles south of Jackson) [62 miles north of Mobile if you're counting...]

I am raising my first flock which consists of 10 Barred Plymouth Rock pullets, 15 Golden Comet (Gold Sex Link/Gold Star etc.) pullets and a Rhode Island Red Rooster.

I also built my first brooder this year. Then the chicks grew a bit faster than I anticipated so I rushed to build my first coop, and then they were all "Cooped-up" and what not so I built my first chicken run... which led to my first electric fence installation...

I thought raising chickens was supposed to be relaxing!!

Here's my coop although it still lacks a bit of paint... :
