ALABAMA!!

How hard are turkeys to raise? Never had any experience with them. They are very nice looking.
I love my turkey I just gave up my chickens to make more room for more turkey. I hand raise them from day one handle them every day and treat them as a pet and my turkey are all very gentle.
A 14 month old child can hand feed and pet my grown turkey. I do hatch chicks to be a few days old to teach the poults to eat and drink. I have lost some but my turkey are good blood lines and strong healthy birds. Turkey will follow you around like a puppy dog and have wonderful personalities.

Bama Dude just let me know when. I got plenty of eggs.

My last 3 or 4 posts (with pics) a week or two ago were about MY Silkies and wanted to know what Color they would be called. There are several Silkie owners on here and I was hoping some of them would chime in and tell me what these color patterns are so I would know what they are called.

No one knew the answer, most likely.

Quote: Yup! I've been busy with the new birds so I haven't been able to say so myself.

Quote: I wouldn't mind having goats again.Sugar was a pet that happened to be a meat breed, so not that same as raising them for meat or milk. I want to raise them for milk, but I need to find someone I can buy it from first to find out if I like it or not. I can't drink cows milk from the store. It's too painful.

Do any of you Alabamians have ducks?
Or do you all only have chickens?
I have Mallards. Actually, dad has mallards. I am not a fan of ducks.

I've had ostrich a long time ago, when it was the new fad. I can't recall what I thought about it, so it must not have been too special. Emu and ostrich scare me silly. When I was little we went to this safari park where you could just walk right between them and lil bitty me looked awfully tasty to those scary things.

Rabbit is delicious. It's like a sweeter, every so slightly gamy chicken. Think chicken with character. Venison-ey. The hind quarters are my favorite. They are next on the list of things I'm getting to raise.

I dream of self sufficiency too.

Goats are not going to happen for me, smack dab in town. We've got some goats living on the outskirts of our neighborhood though, where the backyards adjoin farm land.

I've got a neighbor who keeps calling the cops on us  Complains the dog barks. Mind you, each of my other neighbors has dogs too.. Even the cops say they don't hear a thing, whenever they come by. So, I try not to push my luck. No complaints about my mini farm though, other than our very first rooster who was an utter nuisance (and had already been served for dinner by the time the cops came).

Haha

I so badly want some land further out of town limits.. but, we have what we have and make do. It's just a matter of time though, as much as the husband doesn't want to think about it. We have two boys and a girl and only one bedroom between the three.

Emus/ostrich are just scary... And I don't really see any use for them?

I would love another source of meat, I just don't know if I could do the slaughtering myself... They're so cute and fluffy!!! And I used to have several as pets and I think I would get TOO attached... I think it's the skinning that throws me... I can pull feathers but the skinning is different

We have neighbors but we are on an acre and outside of city limits... If my neighbors don't like the sights or sounds they are welcome to put in earplugs, put up a privacy fence or move =] Not that we are the bad neighbors... Yard is clean and mowed unlike the neighbor who I think is collecting broke down washing machines =\

My holdback on the goat front is the lack of a fence...
