Thanks for the welcomes.

chicdaddy72, My son lives in Boaz.I'm in behind the flea market on Hwy 278.You know anybody that raises Wheaton Marans or Speckled Sussex? I'm needing some new blood to put in mine.

I know a guy over toward Morgan city that has speckled sussex and they are from Amish blood lines. I will check with him and see. I have seen these birds personally and they are good stuff. I know most people in Boaz since I have lived there my whole life so I probably know your son or at least ran into him. What might his name be?

Hi, Bex!

Welcome to BYC! and the ALABAMA!! thread.

I will try to help you as best I can. I need a little more info. How old are your hens? Your rooster? Tell us about the feed you are using. Have you done this before or is having chickens new to you? Are the hens leaving the nest with the few chicks that hatch? Are you messing with them much? Did you add eggs to the nest after the hens started sitting or did you make sure any eggs added by other hens were removed?

There are several possibilities on what is going on, but I need to narrow the choices. The first thing I would do is try candling the non-hatched eggs as soon as the hen leaves. If it glows all over with the light, it is infertile or stopped growing early. If it is dark except for the space in the large end, and it doesn't smell bad, stick it under another hen.

That info will help figure out what is happening. It could also be nutrition issues with the hens or rooster. There are some other possible scenarios, but I'll help sort through those if it is not one of the ones above.

Let us know!
