ALABAMA!!

I have found if I leave them with momma and everyone else out there they will soon perish. (trampled on or picked on and attacked by another) If you leave them with momma she may think the others won't hatch or think she has enough to try and keep track of and abandon the nest of other eggs then those eggs will die.
So I just take the babies out each day and momma stays on the eggs to hatch out others. After they are all grown up I re-introduce them back to the flock where I need or want them.
I have my gold and silver Phoenix separated in hutches and my Silkies are in their own tractor. I have 3 Buff Orph hens & 1 Blue Orph hen in with a Blue/buff mixed Orph Roo. Then all my other chickens will be a mixed flock free ranging at times.
I got 9 Phoenix crossed with the Silkies (half Phoenix/half Silkie -some gold some silver) i just hatched out a couple months ago so I am going to try to make something for them to go in. I am going to see if these mixes are Super Brooders since both of these like to go Broody. Some of them look pretty kewl.

What's the going rate on laying hens? Thinking about selling a couple of mine.

My Daddy always said, "They are worth whatever someone will pay for them."

I have sold them for $5 each, but that was along with about 20 cockerels, and it was really cheap. If they are young (< a year) and healthy, $10 is not too much for even the lowly mutt yard bird. If they are good examples of their breed or particularly nice quality they could bring $25. If you are the only one in town selling them and several people are looking for hens..............

$15-$20 is reasonable imo. Gotta figure it costs a fair penny to get them to that age, and the buyer doesnt have to weed through straight run chicks.

Thanks just think I've got too many thought I would lose some because they free range during the day, haven't lost any coop is getting crowded. The ones I'm thinking about selling are SLW beautiful big hens. May get rid of two of them

Or I could just build a bigger coop

I'm in the same boat. I purchased quite a bit of straight run chicks, expecting roosters... It seems I have been 'blessed' with pullets

Still waiting for more crowing, surely I can't have that much luck? But.. I'm getting more and more itty bitty eggs in the nestboxes.
