ALABAMA!!

ekemily

I live in Harvest which is in northwest Madison County in the north central part of the state.

I live in Alabama now, but in fact I'm a transplanted yankee from Massachusetts. My grandmother had chickens when I was a little girl. We lived with her for a little while and I think I even collected eggs with her at times. But I actually grew up in a housing project. However, that was many, many years ago. I'm a grandmother myself now if that gives you any indication.

I love living in Alabama but let me tell you a little story that will help you understand the cultural difference. About 6 months ago, I had a fox seizing in my back yard, maybe 8 feet from my garage. Probably distemper. Couldn't get the sheriff's deputies to shoot it. I was pretty sick about it. I went on facebook and posted to my yankee friends, "Why don't these people in the south keep their wild animals in the zoo the way we do up north?" (This was intended to be a tongue-in-cheek comment.) The good news however, was the fact that at 9:00PM, I only had to knock on 1 door to find a neighbor with a gun who was willing to use it. Now THAT would never happen in MA.

I'm still kind of new to gardening but I've learned to love it. I'm looking forward to keeping a few chickens. I guess I can keep a stick handy to poke around in there. Thanks for your encouragement.

lol. You don't have to look far to find a gun or someone that knows how to use it down here. I'm a young mom, and I carry a gun around the farm or have a machete close by. It's just a way of life.
If you come down this way, Fairhope is absolutely beautiful. It's right on Mobile Bay. The downtown has more little "cutesy" shops than any town I've ever been in. It's a really nice tourist destination. We also have the Grand Hotel in Point Clear. Everyone should check it out! Lots of antiquing too. It's mainly snowbirds, yuppies and retirees, but there are a few chickeners around here.

(East of Anniston - 12 miles from GA line)

New to BYC, but love it so far. I have lived in Alabama my entire life and wouldn't change a thing. I have a small chicken farm and hatchery - my husband just got finished building me a new barn for my chickens. I moved from 3 pens to 13 pens. Gotta love that man, bless his heart he worked on it every evening for about a month.
Hope to meet more Alabamians......

It sounds beautiful where you are. Will have to do some serious thinking about it. I love it here in northern Alabama also.

Hi everybody,
Haven't been on in a while. Welcome to all the new byc'ers. I am on chicken overload here. I have a bunch of black copper marans running around, from three different breeders. I really really like those birds. They are sweet and the older ones that I haven't culled yet are turning into gorgeous roosters. I have a group of younger marans from a breeder in n.c. that I can't wait to see how they turn out.
Speaking of snakes, I hadn't been getting very many eggs from the girls in the pen behind the house. So night before last while I'm at the barn, my husband comes walking down there holding a chicken snake, who had just eaten two eggs. LOL, the little stinker got a new home about 2 miles down the road. We never kill snakes, we just find them new homes many miles away

.
If anyone is interested I am selling most of my black australorp pullets. They are about 3 months old now, and also I am giving away the marans roosters that I am culling. Right now I have about 5 of those that need to go.

I just thought I would post that I am having a flock reduction sale. I need to make room for projects to be started and have hatched way to many chicks this year. I will be selling ALL my welsummers, 1 roo and 5 hens along with all of the chicks produced. Which is a bunch. A trio of Blue Laced Red Wyandottes. I originally thought them to all be splash but I've noticed some of the chicks are darker than others, so I believe the roo is a splash and the hens are light blue. Will be selling all of their chicks too. I have some Black copper marans In the grow out room for sale. These will be for sale locally until july 16th where they will be sold at auction in hanceville, al. Just pm me for more info. Thanks. There will be some odd and end chickens for sale too. all pure breeds but not necessarily breeding groups.
