Alaska Chicken Lover's Soup for the Cold!!

Are you in Anchorage? I went down to the scale house at Anchorage Sand and Gravel. They have lots of samples of the different rocks. I wanted to see what D-1 looked like for a project going on here. I ended up with some extra and put it at the door of the coops. Turns out it made great grit. The chickens and ducks both eat it. I think sand is too fine.

My mom and I have never baked the shells. I rinse them out and let them dry. When a bunch cllect either I or the kids crush them. I would definately offer oyster shell. The rocks you can get for free.

Umm, I think Carmen's Ark is full. DH doesn't even understand the number of birds we are transporting. I told him not to worry about it---just make sure all the junk is out of the back. How many birds can fit in a large airline kennel?

I don't usually buy grit, because they get it in the dirt, but I do buy the clean play-sand at Home Depot for their dusting pit... they like to eat that too.

For those who asked, here is a Peach-faced White Ameraucana... this is what Pidge "normally" looks like. All the babies look very similar to her... some more peach than others, but obviously one of her kids. Pidge lays pale glacier blue eggs, but since daddy is a blue wheaten, I'm thinking their daughters will lay slightly darker eggs.

OK, guys and gals... I'm done. Exhausted... smell like chickens. Need a hot shower, some food, and some rum followed by 9 hours of sleep.

See where my birds are now the ground is all clay/topsoil and theres not much gravel or sand at all where they are at or I wouldnt worry about it. I think though I may check out the play sand. I didnt think about a sand bath for em....one more thing to add to the list.

Goodnight Tori, and Carmen, thanks to you both!

I don't bake my egg shells, and I do buy the oyster shell.

Sounds like you have everything under control!

I might go by AFW tomorrow and see what's on sale. My dogs like the "good stuff" lol.

Good Night!
