I keep saying I am going to do wheatgrass flats for them, but I haven't started yet. At hay prices up here, it may be cheaper and I think they will love it. It's very good for them. Anyway, I guess it depends on whether or not you have space for the trays, though....
I have done it, but with the low light in winter, it grows very slowly. It took about ten days if I remember correctly.
Then, you have to hope they can eat it all up before its frozen solid.
