Had to share this story... My best friend's dad gathered a bunch of eggs from a family flock of RIRs. My best friend's grandfather had died and the family was selling off the flock but my best friend didn't want to see all of her grandfather's flock lost. The last dozen eggs were sent out from Arizona on the 28th of May and did not arrive here until the 7th of Jun. The box looked like it had been drop kicked and a good majority of the eggs were broken (splattered all over the other eggs). I figured we might as well give them a try anyways, so into the 'bator then went (14 total). 9 never developed. So I was left with 5 that appeared to be developing. Yesterday when I got home from work, there were 2 pips. Both of them hatched and are doing well.

Now, just have to hope that it's a roo and hen.

One seems markedly lighter than the other. Curious as to whether or not RIR hen chicks are lighter than the roo chicks....

Thanks, we're very excited that we will be carrying on her grandfather's legacy. He died last fall and the family has been less than considerate of her grandmother. They've pretty much sold off all of the livestock and equipment without even asking the grandmother. Very sad really... Well, if I don't end up with at least one of each sex, I'll end up ordering a couple good quality RIRs from a breeder to carry on and improve the lines.

Congrats on everyone's hatches!

Any pics of the new peeps?

I wasn't going to incubate any this summer, but what can I say, the fever just overtook me and sucked me back in.
Anyone hatching in late July? Hatching buddies anyone?
I'm setting some Lavender Orpington eggs tomorrow along with a couple of eggs from my little Cuckoo Silkie hen. She's been with my Splash roos. According to those with more experience with colors, pullets will be blue and cockerals will be blue Cuckoo.

I also have some Cuckoo and B/B/S Silkie eggs coming in Tuesday from another BYC'er.

I only got six so hopefully the PO didn't scramble them for me like the last two sets of eggs I ordered. (A total of 18 Lav. Silkie eggs and not one developed)

I'm going to candle them before they go in and see if the air cells are intact.
DH just brought them home so they'll go in the bator tomorrow. She included 3 suprise eggs from her BBS Orp pen.
