Albuquerque: a model of urban chicken enlightenment

We do have wonderful chicken ordinances here in Albuquerque! I have done a lot of research for graduate school on chicken ordinances (yes- I do research urban chicken ordinances for credit!), and I have to say that Albuquerque has a great set of regulations.

I lived here for almost 6 years, and I am the founder of our local chicken group- ABQ Urban Chickens. We already had a chicken coop tour, and a chicken keeping 101 class. There is also another 101 class this weekend, as well as a chicken processing class.

The best way to get people to follow the rules and raise chickens correctly is not just through ordinances however, but through community education.

Check out the ABQ Urban Chickenspage to learn more about chicken keeping in Albuquerque, as well as my national site linked below.

So far as I know they don't; it would take a sick and perverse mind to actually come up with that.

However, being a person with a sick and perverse mind I could imagine people sewing little numbered jerseys for their hens, lining up opposite a finish line with a bunch of crickets bouncing around on the other side, and on the count of 3 releasing the birds to watch them go!

Anyhow, what the Albuquerque ordinance specifically forbids is *animal* racing, except for specific sanctioned horse rases at particular places and times. According to the law on the books, poultry are covered by the word "animal". So: no chicken races for us! Also no pigeon, dog, pig, or camel races.

I kind of think they're more worried about cockfighting, and the ban on animal racing is more targeted at greyhounds or other kinds of illegal gambling.

You've evidently never come across LittleChickenRacingTeam, BYC's resident chicken racer.
