Alder chips for run?(pic included)

I sent my husband to get wood chips for the run, and he came back with a truckful of alder chips. They seem kind of "blocky" (see pic below), but the business advertises them as non splintering and say they would be fine for chicken run ( and even safe for children play areas). Thoughts? How are they at water absorption (we are in the rainy PNW).

Yes, alder wood chips have a good moisture absorption capacity, which helps keep the environment dry and reduces the risk of mold formation. Good choice!

Should be fine. Would be better if they were more uneven in size but they're at least chunky which will help with drainage.

How are they at water absorption

Alder wood has traditionally been used for construction in water (docks, bridges etc.) as it is highly resistant to rot. So it should last a relatively long time there.
