All about raising chicks and chickens! Also ask questions!

Thanks. I agree totally - predator proofing and a secure pen are critical. Mine are very well protected even though they don't have a broody with them. Their wire pen is inside our secure run, in full view of the adults at all times. In fact, the adults can walk around their brooder on 3 sides.

We used to just prop one side open during integration, usually starting at about 3 weeks, until I saw and copied @azygous portal doors. Those things are so simple to make and work so well I just love them. I have full integration with the flock when chicks are about 4 weeks old, and I pull the heat and the brooder out of the run at that time. Right now it's 40 degrees out there and raining, which should turn to snow later on tonight, and I have 8 Silkies and 3 other bantams out there roosting. They are 5 and 6 weeks old but I took out Mama Heating Pad and the brooder a couple of weeks ago. They are thriving.

How to Clip your chickens wings

If your girls are flying out of their own you should probably clip their wings so no predators get them!

Here are some pics of the flight feathers to cut.

Most of my girls wings are clipped, and it does not hurt at all!!

Hi, I'm hosting this thread with SassySarah123! Feel free to ask me any questions!
Here's a little advice on some online hatcheries that are recommended:

-My Pet Chicken (minimum order of 3 chicks and you can mix!)
-Cackle Hatchery (great reviews, minimum order of 5 chicks)
-Meyer Hatchery
-JM Hatchery

Here is more advice on chickens--

Common predators to look out for: Racoons, foxes, coyotes, and rodents because they feed on chicken feed

How to predator proof your coop:

Raccoons can open up simple locks, so padlocks and automatic doors will work.

And don't use chicken wire, predators can easily get through it.

Use hardware cloth worth holes 1/2 or 1/4 inch big.

I will be posting more. Feel free to ask any more questions.
I am a host as well as SassySarah123, so thanks!
