Thanks. I agree totally - predator proofing and a secure pen are critical. Mine are very well protected even though they don't have a broody with them. Their wire pen is inside our secure run, in full view of the adults at all times. In fact, the adults can walk around their brooder on 3 sides.
We used to just prop one side open during integration, usually starting at about 3 weeks, until I saw and copied @azygous portal doors. Those things are so simple to make and work so well I just love them. I have full integration with the flock when chicks are about 4 weeks old, and I pull the heat and the brooder out of the run at that time. Right now it's 40 degrees out there and raining, which should turn to snow later on tonight, and I have 8 Silkies and 3 other bantams out there roosting. They are 5 and 6 weeks old but I took out Mama Heating Pad and the brooder a couple of weeks ago. They are thriving.
