All Black Flock

Wow they are gorgeous. WE had an awesome black orpington which the farmer didn't want to sell to us (she wasn't quite right bless her but my daughter really wanted her). We bought her and gave her a really good home for some years. She never laid, never scratched but was so stately and wonderful. The other chickens all got picked on at some point as the pecking order was established and re-established but they never picked on her.

She had the sweetest eyes and temperament. The day before she died she tried to come into the house (something she had never done before) and I shooed her out which I regret as it was like she'd come to say goodbye. Enjoy your flock!

I was all happy, then that ending...I can just see her trying to come in, especially with how mine behave...My Penedesenca are extremely...Well, mama's chicks, I guess...They're two months younger than the rest, so some of the older ones will run them off(none fight, they square up, on occasion, but all are mild tempered, despite there being five roos)...When I'm not home, I think what happens is the two Penes run up to my Shepherd for protection...She's outside their pen, but the older ones still scatter if she moves too fast when I'm not singing...Oh, forgot to mention that...I apparently got them so used to my singing that it is an instant relaxer when they're tensed up at sirens, ice cream truck, or the neighbor's dogs barking/howling...I thought it was a bit funny, so I had my sister on a video call and they were huddled in the corner of the pen(ambulance and dogs howling) and she watched as I sang and they started migrating out to scratch and drink and look at me and my Shepherd Lol

Sorry...I got sidetracked...That bond your girl had with you just made me think about how my two younger ones and Diaval(the one I babied) act around me and my dog...

:thumbsup
I can totally relate to the singing.. Well,,,, I don't sing to my chickens, but I do talk to them. They can recognize my voice, and react to me friendly . They don't know what I'm saying, but do know I'm talking to them.
I say such silly sentences, like,,,, COME HERE CUTIE PIE,,, GOT SOME TREATS FOR YOU. and other silly things as such. They react to the pleasant tone of my voice I assume.

I know I just posted some updated pictures, but I had to share these as well...

This is how you KNOW this punk knows he's pretty Lmao He poses for pictures for me 😅 This is still Diaval Lol

This next picture is the Penedesenca pullet...That is my assumption....I've done a bit of research because the combs/waddles were confusing to me and I was sure she was a she as a chick, but the comb/waddle threw me off...It is paler than the roos, smaller, and(my way of saying it) more fine-toothed vs wide-toothed Lol Anyway...I realized today that it's not so much the pair that get chased off, but when the roo chased her, the older pullets chase him off 😅

This is her "talking" to me and my Shepherd...The clipped fence there is so I can give them treats without opening everything up, since I don't have a gate on their temporary pen

And this last picture is the two of them together...That is a more difficult shot to get Lol

I have always loved black, especially with just a splash of color, so when I was finally able to start getting my chicks(very recent) I decided to be very picky. I will be starting out with four to five initial pure breeds(all black with their gorgeous shines) and laying different colored eggs...I plan to cross certain ones to try for solid black colored egg layers, which I know will take many years of trial and error and perfecting, but I am curious...Has anyone else ever tried something similar?
I'm incu-hatching my very first batch, and they are Ayam Cerami's!!! I'm sooooo excited! 5/5 are viable at a week and a half :) :)

So, when I went out to feed and change their water today, I noticed this poor girl had vent prolapse...It didn't look like anyone else had noticed(no pecking, thankfully), so she's patched up and in isolation...She is not happy with that either, I'll tell you that much...I put her right next to the main pen because she's obviously never been alone and she started fighting to get through the fencing...Poor girl...But I'm not about to have it reoccur and her die just because she doesn't want to be alone for two days... 😥
