Welcome and settle in with the flock!

A suggestion would be to get more than 2 chickens! They're social animals. Good luck to you and your daughter!

I haven't seen you post anything new, but if you ever decide to come back, I have heard of people having just one chicken as a house pet... usually a silkie or bantam. I think it might be a little more work than a dog or cat, and some people have them wear diapers. Not sure if that's what your were thinking, but here are a few threads discussing it:

Otherwise, the typical feed store chicks (be sure to look for sexed pullets) will do best in a flock of at least 3, mixed breeds are fine and usually more fun. They'll need a coop and a secure run, but it's definitely a rewarding experience.

Good luck with your decision!

p.s. DE was kind of a fad a few years back... everyone jumped on the bandwagon but it's really not that necessary in chicken keeping, and definitely not beneficial in deep litter. Deep litter only works when all the micro-organisms are present, you don't want to kill them off.
