All I want for Christmas....

Today I am turning on my incubator to let it warm up over the weekend and so I can watch thte temps to make sure all is stable. Im still a little confused by the humidity and what % is the best for the 1st 18 days or Ive seen some people do dry hatches. If any one can help me out this is my first time. Eggs come tomorrow

And roughly at what days shouId I candle I was thinking about days 7/14/18 then lockdown. Can I candle more for the sake of learning with the kids or is 3 plenty?

Also just thought about this am I supposed to heat up the incubator and put room temperature eggs in to already 100degree incubatorbator or put the eggs in the incubator and then turn it on and let everything warm up together?

I am a total noob at it too, so exciting! I want Lavender Orp's or blues, and this seems to be the only way i can get them without a 4 hour drive. There's a ton of really good threads here on forum, i have my fingers crossed for you, best of luck!

The incubator has been on all day holding steady at 99.6 degrees and 46% humidity. Is that humidity ok or should it be down a little?

Hello all! So surprised to see so many people hatching little ones this month. I have been to this site a lot since July but I'm finally making the plunge :D

I raised chickens as a kid, but since I moved out and got a house I've been chicken-less. My spouse eats lots of eggs, so it seemed like a good idea for us. We made a little incubator and got a few eggs, and we should be hatching just before Christmas. He wanted to get chicks, but I couldn't resist trying to hatch eggs!

We've got eight eggs, I'll be happy if I get just one little one out. I have a brooder set up in the study already, just waiting for some occupants! So excited!

Yay Welcome to the Holiday hatch and glad you finally joined us on BYC. What day are you on? and what kind of eggs?

This is day one/two, I put them in late at night yesterday (I'm counting it as still day one). They are from a friend out in Rockwall Texas who is moving, they're mostly mystery! She has mostly Rhode Island, with a few Cochin, Wyandotte, Marans and Leghorns. The eggs are mostly a creamy tan with a couple of white eggs, but that doesn't tell me much.

Just adds to the spirit of the season right? I have to wait to know what's in them.

Edit: I'm kind of hoping they are not Leghorns, as they are all my parents had growing up. They were nice chickens but I'm hoping for something new.

So I just got my eggs(21) YAY! But I noticed a few of them are slightly soiled with just a few streaks. Are those eggs going to be ok? Should I clean them, wipe them, rinse them, or disinfect them before I set them in the morn?

if you chose to clean them take a warm (like the temp of the egg) moist towel and wipe off the worst of it then they will be fine :)
