All my horses are ill.... VERY LONG

Oh wow, Jean, I'm so sorry to hear this! Sounds like they'll probably all pull through okay, but even if your guy does get laminitis you can get through that too (just takes awhile); I've been there.

My thoughts are with you; I know this must be a very difficult time.

Jean,
So sorry to hear of the problems!
Here is a founder treatment I've heard about that perhaps could help, BUT BE SURE TO RESEARCH because I'm NOT sure it's safe or reliable:
I've heard that sometimes pricking the horse's leg a couple places just above the hoof can help relieve pressure and problems of blood pooling and stagnating. I believe this is supposed to be done not immediately but perhaps a couple/few days into treatment, so that fresh, flowing blood isn't just bled out.
Again--WARNING! WARNING! I don't know if this is a valid treatment. I've thought I might use it in a founder case (after more checking) if I encounter one in future, though, that seems like might be helped by it.
Best wishes!,

If you do have a case of laminitis there was a thread just recently that a bunch of us were posting that Bloomingchick had started you might want to go through it.
Again I hope each day forward is better...

When the swelling starts going down I would get xrays on their hooves or at least the front hooves of the worst one. Then you can get a jump on corrective trimming/shoeing if necessary before any laminitis becomes apparent. The faster you catch it and try to correct the turning of the coffin bone and keep the hoof walls together the better chance you have of complete recovery. If you wait around for the other symptoms to go away completely before deciding whether the horse is lame from laminitis or not it will have more time to progress.

I have a horse with a metabolic disorder who foundered very severely and is constantly on the verge of foundering every year. If it gets too hot, he eats too much new grass, or too much sugary clover he starts to founder again. While we spent 6months trying to figure out what was up with his hooves (they were just splaying out horrible at the time) his coffin bone dropped to the point you could see it coming out the bottom of his foot and the hoof walls seperated halfway up the hoof. All the sole abscessed and most had to be cut away. We waited until then to take xrays and figured it out too late to ever make him sound again.

My three year olds are good this morning. The filly (she's 3 & unbred still a filly?) is still a little sore, but walking around eating and drinking normally. The gelding, I couldn't catch him last night to give him his bute, so he's ok.

The older paint has some swelling in the back legs. Needs bute and hosing down today when my husband gets back with "untainted" hay.

And my baby, Scottie, is at the vet's house. He called this morning and said his heart rate is down and so is alot of the swelling. He took off his shoes and x-rayed his feet and they look perfect at this time.

However, I still need to x-ray him in 2-4 weeks to make sure they stay that way. He is still pretty lathargic and in lots of pain. The vet said taht his size and the amount of mass he carries on him causes laminitis to be more pronounced.

I did call about 3-4 large animal vets in the area to let them know in case someone else got this hay too. I would hate to think that someone's horse died because of this.

Again, thanks for the support you guys are great!

Good to get those radiographs of the feet as now you have a basis to go on if there shows to be any further trouble..
I hope they supplier has checked with you or will soon to see how your horses are doing and offers to pay some of the vet bill at least...

I know it's a big expence But ya can't put a price on your family.... I bet it felt good to see the gelding trott out like normal...

Sorry to hear about the horses! Its really great of you though to contact other vets around the area to spread the word to prevent any other problems. I can't think of many people around here that would do anything like that.
I coulnt imagine my goats having to go through anything like that, I would be a basket case, but a horse, which is a lot bigger and more expensive care...that must be why I do not have horses (also lack of room). I know NOTHING about horses.
