Hi there,
Our young Black Sex Link was laying excellent eggs since August but the last 2 eggs were small, esp the last one this morning which is the size of a Robin egg. She seems ok in health and behavior. Our other 4 asst hens are doing just fine. Thanks for any insight and answers as to this sudden weird egg size.

Hi (love your user name btw),

Sometimes a chicken will lay eggs smaller than usual. The causes can include over-crowding or stress, among others. Since you mentioned that she seems healthy, those may be the reason for the change in egg size.

Here's a very good article from the Learning Center about egg issues:

Thanks for responding! Updating - She is back to normal size eggs now so not sure what went haywire. Not stressed as far as we can determine all 5 appear as happy clams, nice roomy coop & run, 5 hens in a 4'x5' coop with attached 12'x8' run with extra run area under the coop which is 22" off the ground. All of this is enclosed within hardware cloth fencing 1/2" hole size, also buried underground with 2X10 boards. Weird to get an egg hardly bigger than a jelly bean, ha, will fry it up soon :)

Final update :

I fried the tiny egg this morning and to my surprise it did not have a yoke, only white.
The End!
